Most arm sprains heal within 1 to 6 weeks, depending on which ligament is injured and how badly it’s damaged. Mild sprains that only stretch the ligament can feel better in as little as a week, while partial tears typically need 4 to 6 weeks. A complete ligament tear can take several months to fully recover.
Healing Time by Severity
Ligament sprains are classified into three grades, and the grade is the single biggest factor in how long your arm will take to heal.
A Grade 1 sprain means the ligament was stretched but not torn. You’ll notice mild swelling, some tenderness, and discomfort when you move the joint. Most people recover in 1 to 3 weeks and can use the arm for light tasks fairly quickly.
A Grade 2 sprain involves a partial tear of the ligament. Pain, swelling, and bruising are more noticeable, and using the joint normally will be difficult. Recovery typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, and you may need a brace or splint for part of that time.
A Grade 3 sprain is a complete tear or rupture of the ligament. Severe swelling, bruising, and joint instability are common. Recovery can take several months, and some Grade 3 sprains require surgery to restore stability to the joint.
Location Matters
When people say “sprained arm,” they usually mean the wrist, elbow, or shoulder. Hand, elbow, and wrist sprains generally heal quickly, often within a few weeks for mild to moderate injuries. Shoulder sprains, particularly those involving the ligaments around the collarbone or the joint capsule, tend to sit at the longer end of the recovery spectrum because the shoulder is a complex, highly mobile joint.
Wrist sprains are the most common arm sprain, often caused by catching yourself during a fall. These are worth paying attention to because the wrist contains a network of small ligaments, and a “minor” wrist sprain that doesn’t improve after two weeks may actually involve a ligament that needs more targeted treatment. Elbow sprains frequently happen during sports or after a sudden twisting force, and they follow the general grade-based timeline closely.
What to Do in the First Few Days
The current best practice for soft-tissue injuries, outlined in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, replaces the old RICE protocol with a framework called PEACE and LOVE. In the first 1 to 3 days, the priorities are protecting the injury, elevating the limb above heart level, using compression with a bandage or tape, and avoiding overtreatment.
One part of this approach surprises many people: the recommendation to avoid anti-inflammatory medications in the early stage. Inflammation is actually part of how your body repairs damaged tissue, and suppressing it with medication, especially at higher doses, may slow long-term healing. Ice falls into the same category. While it numbs pain temporarily, there’s growing evidence it can interfere with the repair process.
Protection means limiting movement of the injured joint for those first few days to prevent further damage. But prolonged rest is also a problem. Keeping a joint completely still for too long weakens the surrounding muscles and can reduce the quality of the healing tissue. Pain is your guide here: once the sharp, acute pain starts to settle, gentle movement is beneficial.
Braces, Slings, and Immobilization
Depending on the severity, your doctor may recommend a brace, splint, or sling. For mild sprains, you might only need support for a few days. More serious injuries could require immobilization for up to six weeks. The goal is to protect the ligament long enough for meaningful healing to occur without letting the joint stiffen up from disuse.
If you’re given a brace or sling, wearing it consistently matters. Removing it too early or skipping it during sleep can re-stress the healing ligament and extend your recovery. At the same time, your doctor will likely encourage you to begin gentle range-of-motion exercises before the brace comes off permanently. This balance between protection and early movement is what leads to the best outcomes.
Returning to Normal Activity
An active approach to recovery consistently outperforms passive treatments like ultrasound therapy, manual therapy, or acupuncture in the weeks after a sprain. That means doing prescribed exercises matters more than any hands-on treatment you might receive. Range-of-motion exercises usually come first, followed by strengthening work as the ligament heals and pain decreases.
For a Grade 1 sprain, most people return to normal daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks and can resume sports or heavy lifting by week 3. Grade 2 sprains typically allow a return to desk work and light use within 2 to 3 weeks, but full-strength activities may not be safe until 6 weeks or longer. Grade 3 sprains require the most patience. Even after the ligament has healed structurally, rebuilding the strength and stability around the joint can add weeks or months to the total recovery.
Rushing back too quickly is the most common reason arm sprains become recurring injuries. A ligament that hasn’t fully healed is more vulnerable to re-injury, and each subsequent sprain tends to be worse than the last.
Sprain or Fracture?

The honest answer is that you can’t always tell from symptoms alone. A common myth is that if you can move your arm, it’s not broken. That’s not true. Children with non-displaced fractures sometimes have only mild swelling, while teenagers with severe sprains can develop dramatic swelling and bruising that looks far worse.
The only reliable way to distinguish a sprain from a fracture is an X-ray. If your arm or wrist looks crooked or deformed, go to an emergency room. You should also seek immediate care if you’re experiencing extreme pain, swelling that keeps getting worse instead of better, skin discoloration beyond normal bruising, or numbness in the hand or fingers. These signs can indicate a fracture, a more severe ligament injury, or compromised blood flow that needs prompt attention.
