Each Wegovy pen contains exactly one dose and is designed for one-time use. A standard carton comes with four pens, covering four weeks of once-weekly injections. So one box of Wegovy lasts one month.
One Pen, One Dose, One Week
Wegovy pens are prefilled, disposable, single-dose autoinjectors with an integrated needle. You use one pen per week, on the same day each week, at any time of day. Once you’ve given yourself the injection, you throw the pen away. There’s no dialing a dose or reusing the device.
Each carton contains four pens at the same dose strength. During the initial dose-escalation phase, your dose increases every four weeks, which means you’ll finish one carton before moving up to the next dose level. The available strengths are 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg, with 2.4 mg being the standard maintenance dose.
UK and European Pens Work Differently
If you’re outside the United States, your Wegovy pen may be a multi-dose version called FlexTouch. These pens contain four doses each, so one pen lasts four weeks rather than one. After delivering all four doses, some solution may remain visible in the pen, but it’s not enough for another full dose. Discard the pen at that point.
How Long a Pen Stays Good in the Fridge
Unopened Wegovy pens last 24 to 30 months from the manufacture date when stored in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Always check the expiration date printed on the carton and pen before injecting. Keep the pens in their original carton to protect them from light.
Storage Outside the Fridge
You can keep a Wegovy pen at room temperature for up to 28 days, as long as the temperature stays between 46°F and 86°F (8°C to 30°C) and you haven’t removed the pen cap. This makes travel straightforward since you won’t necessarily need a cooler for short trips. After 28 days at room temperature, throw the pen away even if it hasn’t been used.
If a pen has been exposed to temperatures above 86°F, discard it. The same goes for pens that have been frozen. Semaglutide is sensitive to temperature extremes, and there’s no way to tell visually whether the medication has been compromised. When storing pens in the fridge, keep them away from the freezer compartment and the back wall where temperatures tend to drop lowest.
Matching Your Supply to the Dosing Schedule
Wegovy follows a gradual dose-escalation schedule. You spend four weeks at each dose level before moving up, which lines up neatly with the four-pen carton. Here’s what the timeline looks like:
- Weeks 1 through 4: 0.25 mg (one carton)
- Weeks 5 through 8: 0.5 mg (one carton)
- Weeks 9 through 12: 1 mg (one carton)
- Weeks 13 through 16: 1.7 mg (one carton)
- Week 17 onward: 2.4 mg maintenance dose (one carton per month, ongoing)
The full escalation takes about 16 weeks before you reach the maintenance dose. Each prescription refill gives you a fresh four-week supply. If you miss a dose and it’s been fewer than five days since you were supposed to inject, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If more than five days have passed, skip it and continue on your regular day the following week.
