How Long Does Acid Stay in Your System: Urine, Blood & More

LSD (acid) clears from your bloodstream within about 8 to 16 hours, but its byproducts can show up in urine for roughly 24 hours after use. The drug has a short half-life of about 2.5 to 3 hours, meaning your body eliminates half of the dose in that time. Despite the relatively quick biological clearance, the psychological effects of a trip can last 8 to 12 hours or longer, which often surprises people who assume the drug leaves their system when the effects wear off.

How Long Effects Last vs. How Long It Stays

There’s a meaningful gap between how long you feel acid’s effects and how long it remains detectable. When taken orally, effects typically begin within 30 minutes and can persist for 8 to 12 hours depending on the dose. But LSD itself is already being broken down well before the trip ends. Your liver converts it into inactive byproducts, primarily through a process of oxidation. Only about 1% of the original dose is excreted unchanged in urine over 24 hours.

The main byproduct your body produces is present at concentrations 16 to 43 times higher than LSD itself, which is why labs often test for this metabolite rather than the drug directly. It also hangs around longer than LSD, giving tests a slightly wider window to catch it.

Detection Windows by Test Type

Different biological samples offer different detection windows:

  • Blood: LSD is detectable in blood for roughly 8 hours at typical doses. At higher doses (around 200 micrograms), researchers have detected it up to 16 hours after ingestion. Blood tests offer the shortest window.
  • Urine: Specialized urine tests can pick up LSD and its byproducts for up to 24 hours. However, concentrations in urine are extremely low compared to other drugs, measured in picograms per milliliter rather than nanograms. Using the parent drug alone, the realistic detection window narrows to about 12 to 22 hours.
  • Hair: Hair testing can theoretically provide a months-long lookback period based on the average hair growth rate of about 1 centimeter per month. In practice, though, detecting LSD in hair remains unreliable. The concentrations are so low that highly specialized equipment is needed, and results are difficult to interpret consistently. Hair testing for LSD is not considered dependable.

LSD Doesn’t Show Up on Standard Drug Tests

The federal five-panel test mandated by SAMHSA screens for amphetamines (including MDMA), cocaine, marijuana, opioids, and PCP. Expanded 10-panel and 12-panel tests add substances like benzodiazepines and barbiturates, but still don’t routinely include LSD.

Testing for LSD requires a specialized, separate test that most employers don’t order because it’s expensive and technically challenging. The drug’s extremely low concentrations in the body make detection difficult even with targeted testing. That said, specimens can be tested for any controlled substance on a case-by-case basis under federal guidelines, so specialized testing is possible if specifically requested.

Factors That Affect How Quickly You Clear It

Your body’s ability to process LSD depends on several individual variables. Since the liver does nearly all the work of breaking the drug down, liver health and function play a central role. The specific enzymes involved vary from person to person based on genetics. People who metabolize drugs more slowly through certain enzyme pathways may experience stronger or longer-lasting effects from the same dose.

Other factors that influence clearance speed include how much food is in your stomach when you take it, stomach acidity, how quickly your digestive system moves contents along, your overall metabolic rate, and whether you’ve used LSD recently (tolerance from repeated use can affect the experience, though less is known about how tolerance changes elimination speed). Body composition, age, and hydration also play a role, as they do with most substances processed by the liver.

Why Detection Is Harder Than With Other Drugs

LSD is active at remarkably small doses, typically 50 to 200 micrograms. For comparison, a single dose of many common drugs is measured in milligrams, which are a thousand times larger. This means the amount of LSD circulating in your blood and excreted in your urine is vanishingly small to begin with, and it drops rapidly as the liver breaks it down.

Urinary concentrations of LSD fall in the range of 200 to 1,000 picograms per milliliter. Other commonly tested drugs produce urine concentrations in the nanograms-per-milliliter range, which is roughly a thousand times higher. This is why standard immunoassay panels used for workplace screening aren’t sensitive enough to catch LSD, and why even targeted tests have such a narrow detection window. By the time most people would be tested, the drug and its byproducts have already dropped below detectable levels.
