How Long Does Active Sleep Last in Newborns?

Active sleep in newborns typically lasts about 20 to 25 minutes per cycle, and newborns spend roughly 50% of their total sleep time in this state. That’s a striking amount compared to adults, who spend only about 20% of sleep in REM (the adult equivalent of active sleep). If you’re a new parent watching your baby twitch, grunt, and flutter their eyelids during sleep, this is almost certainly what you’re seeing.

How Long Each Cycle Lasts

A newborn’s entire sleep cycle runs about 45 to 50 minutes, roughly half the length of an adult’s 90-minute cycle. Active sleep takes up about half of each cycle, so a single stretch of active sleep lasts roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Newborns also tend to fall asleep directly into active sleep rather than passing through quieter stages first, which is the opposite of what adults do. This means the twitching and movement often start the moment your baby drifts off.

Because newborns sleep 14 to 17 hours a day and spend about 50% of that time in active sleep, they can accumulate seven or more hours of active sleep in a 24-hour period. By around six months, sleep cycles begin lengthening, and the proportion of active sleep starts to drop. By adulthood, REM accounts for roughly 20% of total sleep, a gradual decline that begins in infancy and continues through childhood.

What Active Sleep Looks and Sounds Like

Active sleep is easy to mistake for waking up. Your baby’s eyes may move rapidly beneath closed lids, their fingers and toes may twitch, and their breathing becomes irregular. Many babies grunt, groan, sigh, whimper, or make cooing sounds. You might also hear gurgling from their digestive system. Their facial muscles often move too, producing fleeting smiles or grimaces.

These behaviors look random, but they’re not. The twitching in particular appears to serve a specific neurological purpose. Picking up your baby or trying to soothe them during active sleep can actually wake them unnecessarily. If you’re unsure whether your baby is awake or in active sleep, pausing for 30 seconds to a minute before intervening gives you time to tell the difference. A baby in active sleep will usually settle back into quieter sleep on their own.

Why Babies Need So Much Active Sleep

The large proportion of active sleep in newborns isn’t a quirk. It plays a direct role in wiring the brain. Research published in Frontiers in Neurology has shown that the small muscle twitches babies produce during active sleep send sensory feedback to the brain, triggering bursts of electrical activity in the sensory cortex. These bursts, called spindle bursts, are among the most prominent electrical events in the developing brain.

The process works with surprising precision. A twitch in a forelimb triggers activity in the forelimb region of the sensory cortex. A hindlimb twitch activates the hindlimb region. This topographic feedback helps the brain build accurate maps of the body, linking muscles to the correct areas of the cortex. Researchers have compared this process to the way spontaneous waves of activity in the retina help wire the visual system before a baby can even see clearly.

The benefits extend beyond the sensory cortex. In studies on infant rats, the majority of neurons in the hippocampus (a brain region critical for learning and memory) increased their firing rates during twitching episodes. Some of these neurons fired in bursts immediately after a limb twitch, suggesting the sensory feedback from twitching reaches deep into brain structures involved in memory formation. The twitches appear to help coordinate communication between the sensory cortex and the hippocampus, two regions that need to work together for learning throughout life.

In short, those jerky little movements aren’t meaningless. They’re part of how your baby’s brain learns where its body is and how to process touch and movement.

How Active Sleep Changes Over Time

The shift away from active sleep happens gradually. In the first few months, babies continue to enter sleep through the active phase and spend close to half their sleep time there. Between three and six months, sleep architecture begins reorganizing. Babies start cycling through a quiet sleep stage before entering active sleep, more like the adult pattern. Sleep cycles also lengthen, moving from around 50 minutes toward the 90-minute cycles typical of older children and adults.

By six months, the proportion of active sleep has noticeably decreased, and the noisy, twitchy sleep that dominated the newborn period becomes less prominent. Sleep sounds and movements resolve gradually as the baby matures and spends progressively less time in active sleep. By toddlerhood, the sleep cycle structure closely resembles an adult’s, though children still spend a somewhat higher percentage of sleep in REM than adults do.

Quiet Sleep vs. Active Sleep

Newborns cycle between just two sleep states: active and quiet. During quiet sleep, breathing is deep and regular, the body is still, and the face is relaxed. This is the deeper, more restorative-looking phase, and it’s harder to wake a baby from quiet sleep than from active sleep.

The transition between the two can be a vulnerable moment. Babies sometimes briefly wake or stir when shifting from one phase to the next, which is one reason newborns seem to wake so frequently. As sleep cycles mature and lengthen, babies get better at linking one cycle to the next without fully waking, which is what parents experience as their baby “sleeping through the night.” Understanding that active sleep is a normal, necessary, and temporary phase of infant development can make those noisy, restless nights feel a lot less alarming.
