Cardiovascular Effects Can Outlast the Mental Effects
A Mayo Clinic study found that a single 25 mg dose produces significant cardiovascular changes in healthy young adults, even those with no prior exposure. Blood pressure and heart rate both rise, and the body’s stress-response system kicks into higher gear. In the study, the average heart rate increase upon standing doubled from 19 beats per minute before the dose to 38 beats per minute after taking it.
These physical effects can linger after the mental stimulation fades. Your heart rate and blood pressure don’t snap back to baseline the moment you stop feeling alert. For someone without a tolerance to stimulants, these cardiovascular shifts are more pronounced than they would be for a regular prescribed user, and they represent a real physiological stress on the body even if you feel fine otherwise.
What Affects How Long It Stays in Your System
Several factors can shorten or lengthen how long Adderall remains active in your body. One of the most significant is urine pH. Amphetamine is a weak base, which means acidic urine speeds up its excretion. If your diet is high in acidic foods or drinks (citrus, vitamin C supplements, soda), your body clears the drug faster, potentially shortening its effects. Alkaline conditions do the opposite, slowing clearance and keeping the drug circulating longer.
Body weight, liver function, hydration, and individual metabolism also play roles. Someone with a faster metabolism will process the drug more quickly. And because people without ADHD aren’t taking the drug regularly, they have no built-up tolerance, which means a given dose hits harder and can feel like it lasts longer than it would for someone who takes it daily.
The Crash After the Effects Wear Off
When Adderall wears off, the brain has to readjust to functioning without the extra dopamine and norepinephrine it was flooded with. For someone without ADHD who takes the drug occasionally, this rebound can feel like a sharp drop in energy and mood. The first 1 to 3 days after use typically bring exhaustion, fatigue, low mood, and increased but poor-quality sleep.
If someone has been using it repeatedly and stops abruptly, the crash intensifies. Additional symptoms like body aches, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings can appear within a few days and persist for 7 to 10 days. Longer-term withdrawal effects, including lingering low mood and fatigue, can stretch from a few weeks to a month. Full recovery in mood and energy levels generally takes 1 to 3 months after stopping.
The severity of this crash is proportional to how much and how often the drug was used. A single dose produces a milder version: a few hours of feeling flat or tired once the stimulant wears off, sometimes with difficulty sleeping that night despite the fatigue. Repeated non-prescribed use raises the stakes considerably, as the brain begins to downregulate its own dopamine production in response to the artificial surplus.
