Adderall is detectable in hair for approximately 90 days after use, which is the standard detection window for most hair drug tests. In some cases, particularly with heavy or chronic use, traces can persist longer, with studies showing detection up to 120 days and complete clearance by about six months after the last dose.
The Standard 90-Day Window
Hair drug tests work on a simple principle: your hair grows roughly half an inch per month. Testing labs collect a 1.5-inch sample cut close to the scalp, which represents about 90 days of growth. That sample captures a timeline of drug exposure spanning the previous three months.
Adderall contains amphetamine, and that’s what the test looks for. After you take a dose, amphetamine molecules pass from your bloodstream into the cells at the base of the hair follicle. As the hair grows, those molecules get locked into the shaft like a chemical record. Sweat and oil on the scalp can also deposit small amounts of the drug onto hair after the fact, adding another route of exposure.
There’s a built-in blind spot, though. Because new hair takes a few days to emerge from the skin surface, very recent use (within the last week or so) often won’t show up on a hair test. This makes hair testing better suited for detecting patterns of use over weeks and months rather than one-time or very recent doses.
When Detection Extends Beyond 90 Days
For people who used amphetamines regularly over a long period, the detection window stretches. A study tracking chronic users found that the majority still tested positive at 90 days of abstinence. By 120 days, only about 16% still tested positive. Every subject in the study tested negative by 153 days.
With a safety margin built in for individual variation, researchers concluded that chronic users should reliably test negative after six months of abstinence. For someone who took Adderall occasionally or at a low therapeutic dose, clearance is likely faster than for someone who used high doses over months or years.
How Amphetamine Gets Trapped in Hair
The drug enters hair through two main pathways. The primary route is passive diffusion from the blood supply that feeds the hair follicle. As blood circulates through the follicle’s base, amphetamine molecules seep into the developing hair cells. Once those cells harden and push upward as a strand of hair, the drug is essentially sealed inside.
The second pathway is external. Your body excretes amphetamine in sweat and the oily secretions (sebum) on your scalp. These fluids coat existing hair and can deposit drug residue onto strands that have already grown out. This is one reason labs use washing procedures before analyzing a sample, to reduce the influence of surface contamination and focus on what’s embedded in the shaft itself.
What Triggers a Positive Result
Hair tests use specific concentration thresholds to determine a positive result. For amphetamines, the U.S. federal workplace testing standard (set by SAMHSA) uses a cutoff of 0.3 nanograms per milligram of hair. International guidelines from the Society of Hair Testing use a slightly lower cutoff of 0.2 nanograms per milligram.
What this means practically: a single low dose of Adderall may or may not produce enough accumulation in hair to cross that threshold, especially if it was a one-time use weeks before the test. Regular use at prescribed doses, however, reliably produces detectable concentrations. The test doesn’t distinguish between a prescription and illicit use on its own, so if you have a valid prescription, you’ll typically need to disclose it to the testing authority or medical review officer.
Factors That Affect Your Results
Several variables influence how much amphetamine ends up in your hair and how long it stays detectable:
- Dose and frequency: Higher doses and more frequent use deposit more drug into each segment of hair. A person taking 10 mg once will leave a much fainter trace than someone taking 30 mg daily for months.
- Hair growth rate: The half-inch-per-month average is just that, an average. Individual growth rates vary, which can shift the timeline slightly in either direction.
- Hair color and melanin: Darker hair contains more melanin, a pigment that binds more readily to certain drugs, including amphetamines. This has raised concerns about potential bias in hair testing, as darker-haired individuals may retain higher drug concentrations than lighter-haired individuals with identical exposure.
- Sweating: Since amphetamine is excreted in sweat, people who sweat heavily or exercise frequently may deposit more drug onto their hair externally, potentially increasing concentrations.
- Hair treatments: Bleaching, dyeing, and repeated chemical treatments can degrade drug molecules in the hair shaft and lower concentrations, though they don’t reliably eliminate them.
Hair Testing vs. Other Drug Tests
Hair tests have the longest detection window of any common drug testing method. For comparison, Adderall is typically detectable in urine for two to four days after the last dose, in blood for about 24 to 48 hours, and in saliva for one to two days. Hair’s 90-day window makes it the go-to choice when employers or courts want to assess drug use patterns over time rather than catch very recent use.
The tradeoff is that hair tests are less useful for detecting a single recent dose. If someone took Adderall yesterday, a urine test would catch it while a hair test likely would not, since the drug hasn’t had time to grow out past the scalp. Hair testing also currently operates under proposed (not finalized) federal guidelines. SAMHSA has been working on mandatory guidelines for hair-based workplace drug testing, but as of 2025, the rulemaking is still in the proposed rule stage, with unresolved scientific questions around external contamination still under review.
Body hair can also be tested when scalp hair is unavailable. Because body hair grows more slowly and has a longer resting phase, it can sometimes reflect an even wider detection window, though the timeline is less precise than with scalp hair.
