Adderall is typically detectable in urine for 1 to 3 days after a single use, though regular use can extend that window to about a week. How long it lingers in your body depends on several factors, including which formulation you take, your body’s pH balance, and how frequently you’ve been using it.

Adderall contains two active amphetamine compounds, and they leave your body at slightly different rates. The d-amphetamine component has an average half-life of 10 hours in adults, while the l-amphetamine component averages 13 hours. When your urine is more alkaline, less of the drug gets excreted unchanged, and clearance slows down. Everyday factors like diet, hydration, and even antacid use can shift your urine pH enough to make a noticeable difference in how long amphetamine stays detectable.
Liver Enzyme Variations
Your liver breaks down amphetamines using a specific enzyme system. Genetic differences in this enzyme are well documented and vary across the population. Some people are naturally fast metabolizers, clearing the drug more efficiently, while others are slower. These genetic variations are one reason two people taking the same dose can have meaningfully different elimination timelines. If you take other medications that compete for the same liver enzymes, that can also slow Adderall’s breakdown.
Kidney and Liver Health
Both kidney and liver problems can delay amphetamine elimination and lead to the drug staying in your system longer than typical estimates suggest. Since clearance depends on both organs working together, reduced function in either one extends the timeline.

Higher doses mean more drug to eliminate, which naturally takes longer. And if you’ve been taking Adderall daily, your body reaches a steady-state concentration where the amount in your system is higher than after a single dose. Clearing from that accumulated level takes more time than clearing a one-time dose, which is why frequent users can test positive on urine screens for up to a week compared to 1 to 3 days for occasional use.

Amphetamines distribute through body water and tissue, so differences in body mass and composition play a role. Age-related changes in kidney filtration and liver function can also slow elimination, though Adderall hasn’t been formally studied in older adults.
Why Individual Variation Matters
