The exact timeline depends on the type of test, your body’s unique metabolism, and even something as simple as how acidic your urine is.

Adderall XR contains a mix of amphetamine salts, and it’s these amphetamines that drug tests look for. Because the extended-release formula delivers two pulses of medication (one immediately and one hours later), it takes longer to fully leave your body compared to the immediate-release version.

How the Extended-Release Formula Affects Timing

Each Adderall XR capsule contains two types of beads. One set dissolves right away, while the second set releases its dose several hours later. This double-pulse design means your body is still absorbing new amphetamine well after you swallow the pill, which pushes back the clock on when elimination truly begins.

Once absorption is complete, the two forms of amphetamine in Adderall clear at slightly different rates. In adults, d-amphetamine has an average half-life of 10 hours, while l-amphetamine’s half-life is about 13 hours. A half-life is the time it takes for half the drug to leave your bloodstream.
