How Long Does Alcohol Really Last in Your System?

Your body clears alcohol at a steady rate of about one standard drink per hour, which means a night of four drinks takes roughly 4 to 7 hours to fully leave your bloodstream depending on your size and sex. But alcohol can show up on certain tests for days or even weeks after your last drink, so the real answer depends on what you mean by “in your system.”

How Fast Your Body Processes Alcohol

Your liver does nearly all the work. It breaks alcohol down in two steps: first into a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen), then quickly into acetate, which your body converts to water and carbon dioxide and eliminates easily. This process runs at a remarkably fixed speed. Your blood alcohol level drops by about .015 to .020 percent per hour, and nothing speeds that up. Not coffee, not water, not a cold shower. Time is the only thing that clears alcohol from your system.

A standard drink in the U.S. contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That’s 12 ounces of beer, 4 to 5 ounces of wine, or about 1 ounce of liquor. Each one takes roughly an hour to process, though your body weight, sex, and other factors shift that number significantly.

Realistic Timelines by Body Weight

The charts below, based on data from the University of Arizona, show approximate hours to reach a completely zero blood alcohol concentration. These assume standard drinks consumed over a normal social timeframe.

For Men

  • 2 drinks: 2 to 3.5 hours (longer at 140 lbs, shorter at 240 lbs)
  • 4 drinks: 4 to 7 hours
  • 6 drinks: 6 to 10 hours
  • 8 drinks: 8 to 13.5 hours

For Women

  • 2 drinks: 3 to 6 hours (longer at 100 lbs, shorter at 200 lbs)
  • 4 drinks: 5.5 to 12 hours
  • 6 drinks: 8.5 to 17.5 hours
  • 8 drinks: 11.5 to 23 hours

The difference between men and women is substantial. A 140-pound woman who has four drinks needs about 8.5 hours to reach zero, while a 140-pound man needs about 7 hours. At higher drink counts, that gap widens even further. A 100-pound woman who has 8 drinks could still have alcohol in her blood nearly a full day later.

If you’re at the legal limit of 0.08 percent BAC, expect 4 to 5 hours before you’re completely at zero. That’s worth knowing if you stopped drinking at midnight and plan to drive early the next morning.

Why Some People Process Alcohol Slower

Women generally reach higher blood alcohol levels than men after the same number of drinks, even at the same body weight. This is partly because women typically have a lower proportion of body water, so alcohol becomes more concentrated. Women also tend to have smaller liver volumes and less lean body mass, both of which contribute to slower elimination rates measured in grams per hour.

Age matters too. As you get older, your body composition shifts: lean muscle decreases, body fat increases, and total body water drops. Since alcohol distributes primarily into body water, older adults reach higher blood alcohol levels than younger people given the same dose adjusted for weight. A drink hits harder at 60 than it did at 25, and it takes longer to clear.

Eating before or while drinking also changes the picture, though not as dramatically as people assume. A high-carbohydrate meal reduces your peak blood alcohol level and lowers it at the two-hour mark compared to drinking on an empty stomach. Interestingly, high-protein meals don’t have a significant effect on peak levels. Food slows the rate at which alcohol enters your bloodstream, but it doesn’t change how fast your liver can process it once it’s there.

Detection Windows by Test Type

Blood alcohol concentration returns to zero within hours, but specialized tests can pick up traces of alcohol use for much longer. The detection window depends entirely on what’s being measured and which test is used.

  • Breath test: Detects alcohol only while it’s actively in your bloodstream. Typically less than 24 hours after your last drink, often much less.
  • Standard blood test: Similar to breath. Useful for measuring current impairment but not past drinking.
  • Standard urine test: Alcohol itself is detectable for 1 to 3 days.
  • EtG/EtS urine test: These tests look for specific byproducts your body creates when processing alcohol, not alcohol itself. They can detect a drinking episode for up to 80 hours (about 3.3 days) after your last drink.
  • Oral fluid (saliva): Alcohol is detectable for less than a day. Alcohol byproducts can be found for 1 to 2 days.
  • PEth blood test: This test measures a substance that forms in red blood cells when alcohol is present. It can detect drinking for 1 to 2 weeks after a single episode, and up to 4 weeks in people who drink heavily or frequently.

EtG urine tests are commonly used in court-ordered monitoring, workplace programs, and medical settings. They’re sensitive enough to flag a single night of moderate drinking days after the fact. PEth testing is newer and typically used to assess patterns of heavy use over time rather than a single occasion.

Legal Limits and What They Mean

In the United States, the legal BAC limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Most of Europe sets the limit lower at 0.05 percent, and several countries including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia enforce a zero-tolerance 0.0 limit. Norway, Poland, and Sweden set their limits at 0.02 percent, which essentially means any detectable alcohol is illegal.

For commercial drivers and novice drivers, limits are almost always stricter. In Germany and Italy, both groups face a 0.0 limit. The UK is the most lenient in Europe at 0.08 (except Scotland, which uses 0.05).

What catches people off guard is how long it takes to get from 0.08 back to zero. At the standard clearance rate, that’s 4 to 5 hours with no additional drinking. If you had enough drinks to reach 0.12 or 0.15 percent, which is common after a night out, you could still be over the legal limit 6 to 8 hours later. Many morning-after DUI arrests happen to people who genuinely believed they had “slept it off.”

Why You Can’t Speed It Up

Your liver’s processing speed is essentially fixed. The enzymes responsible work at a constant rate regardless of what you do. Drinking water helps with dehydration and may reduce hangover symptoms, but it doesn’t accelerate metabolism. Exercise doesn’t help either. A tiny fraction of alcohol leaves through sweat and breath, but the vast majority (over 90 percent) has to go through your liver, one drink at a time.

The only reliable strategy is time. If you know you need to be at zero by a certain hour, count your drinks, note when you stopped, and add roughly one hour per standard drink as a baseline. Then add a buffer, because individual variation means the “one drink per hour” rule is an average, not a guarantee.
