Alcohol stays in breast milk for about 2 to 3 hours per drink. One drink is detectable for roughly 2 to 3 hours, two drinks for 4 to 5 hours, and three drinks for 6 to 8 hours. These are averages. Your actual clearance time depends on your weight, whether you ate, how fast you drank, and how quickly your body processes alcohol.

Clearance Times by Number of Drinks

The simplest way to estimate how long alcohol will be in your milk is to count your drinks and multiply. Each standard drink adds roughly 2 to 3 hours of clearance time, starting from when you began drinking:

  • 1 drink: about 2 to 3 hours
  • 2 drinks: about 4 to 5 hours
  • 3 drinks: about 6 to 8 hours

A standard drink means 12 ounces of 5% beer, 5 ounces of 12% wine, or 1.5 ounces of 40% liquor. Many cocktails and craft beers contain more alcohol than a single standard drink, so it’s easy to undercount. A 9% double IPA in a pint glass, for example, is closer to two standard drinks.

What Affects How Long It Takes

The 2-to-3-hours-per-drink rule is an average, and several factors push that number up or down. Body weight matters: a person who weighs 120 pounds will clear alcohol more slowly than someone who weighs 170 pounds, because alcohol is distributed across less body mass. Drinking on an empty stomach speeds absorption and raises peak levels in both blood and milk, while eating a full meal before or during drinking slows it down and lowers that peak.

How fast you drink also plays a role. Finishing two glasses of wine in 30 minutes produces a higher, faster spike than sipping them over two hours. And individual variation in liver metabolism means some people simply break down alcohol faster than others, regardless of weight or food intake. If you’re unsure where you fall, waiting on the longer end of the estimate is the safer bet.

How Alcohol Gets Into Milk

Alcohol moves freely between your bloodstream and your breast milk. The concentration in your milk closely mirrors the concentration in your blood at any given moment. That means milk alcohol levels rise as your blood alcohol rises, peak around the same time (typically 30 to 60 minutes after finishing a drink on an empty stomach, or up to 90 minutes with food), and then fall as your liver clears the alcohol from your system. Once alcohol leaves your blood, it leaves your milk too. There’s no reservoir of alcohol sitting in the breast that you need to flush out.

Why Pumping and Dumping Doesn’t Help

Expressing milk does not speed up alcohol clearance. Because milk alcohol levels track your blood alcohol levels in real time, pumping simply removes the milk that’s currently in your breast. New milk your body produces will still contain alcohol if it’s still in your bloodstream. Pumping and dumping can be useful for comfort or to maintain your supply if you’re skipping a feeding, but it won’t get alcohol out of your system any faster. Only time does that.

What This Means for Your Baby

Babies process alcohol far less efficiently than adults. Their livers are immature, and even small amounts take much longer to break down. Research has shown that infants exposed to alcohol in breast milk tend to drink less milk during that feeding and may have disrupted sleep patterns, with shorter sleep periods and more frequent waking. The effects are dose-dependent: the more alcohol in the milk, the more pronounced these changes.

For occasional, moderate drinking (one standard drink), waiting at least 2 hours before nursing keeps the exposure very low. The actual alcohol content of breast milk after one drink is roughly equivalent to the alcohol in a glass of orange juice, since even ripe fruit juice contains trace amounts of alcohol from natural fermentation. That said, newborns under about 3 months are more vulnerable because their livers are even less developed, so extra caution during the earliest weeks makes sense.

Practical Tips for Timing

The easiest approach is to nurse (or pump) right before you have a drink. This gives your body the maximum window to clear the alcohol before the next feeding. If your baby feeds every 2 to 3 hours, one standard drink fits neatly into that window. For two or more drinks, you may need stored milk or formula to cover a feeding while you wait.

If you want extra reassurance, commercial test strips are available that detect alcohol in expressed milk. Manufacturers claim accuracy rates above 99%, and they can confirm whether a sample still contains detectable alcohol. They’re not necessary for everyone, but some parents find them helpful for peace of mind, especially when the timing is tight or the number of drinks is uncertain.

Starting the clock from your first sip (not your last) is a common mistake. If you had your first drink at 7 p.m. and your second at 8:30 p.m., count the clearance time from 8:30 p.m., adding 4 to 5 hours for the two drinks total. That puts your safe window around 12:30 to 1:30 a.m. in that scenario.
