Alcohol can stay in your blood for up to 12 hours after your last drink. The average person’s body eliminates alcohol at a fixed rate of about 0.015% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) per hour, which works out to roughly one standard drink per hour. So the exact number of hours depends on how much you drank, how quickly you drank it, and several biological factors that vary from person to person.
How Your Body Processes Alcohol
Your liver does the heavy lifting. It produces an enzyme that breaks alcohol into a toxic intermediate compound called acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen), then a second enzyme converts that into acetate, which your body breaks down into water and carbon dioxide. This two-step process is efficient but has a speed limit: your liver can only clear about one standard drink per hour, no matter what you do.
A standard drink in the United States contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That’s one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor. If you have three standard drinks, your liver needs roughly three hours just to process the alcohol, and traces can remain detectable in blood well beyond that window.
After heavy drinking, a backup enzyme system kicks in to help. But under normal circumstances, that backup handles only a small fraction of the work. There’s no shortcut. Coffee, cold showers, and food after drinking do not speed up elimination once alcohol is already in your bloodstream.
The 0.015 Per Hour Rule
Your BAC drops by about 0.015 per hour. This number is remarkably consistent across most people, and it gives you a rough way to estimate how long alcohol will stay in your system. If your BAC peaks at 0.08% (the U.S. legal driving limit), it would take about five and a half hours to reach 0.00%.
Here’s where it gets practical. Say you stop drinking at midnight with a BAC of 0.12%. At the 0.015-per-hour rate, you wouldn’t hit zero until roughly 8:00 a.m. Many people are surprised to learn they can still have measurable alcohol in their blood the morning after a night of heavy drinking, even if they feel mostly fine.
Factors That Change How Long Alcohol Stays
While the elimination rate is fairly steady, how high your BAC climbs in the first place varies a lot. A higher peak means more hours before your blood is clear.
- Biological sex. Women tend to reach higher BAC levels from the same amount of alcohol. They typically have higher body fat percentages and lower levels of body water, which means alcohol stays concentrated in the bloodstream rather than being absorbed into tissues. Men also tend to produce more of the stomach enzymes that begin breaking down alcohol before it even reaches the blood.
- Body composition. Muscle tissue absorbs alcohol; fat does not. A person with more muscle mass will generally have a lower BAC than someone with more body fat after the same number of drinks.
- Food in your stomach. Eating before or while drinking slows absorption significantly. Food triggers a valve at the bottom of your stomach to close during digestion, keeping alcohol from reaching the small intestine where most absorption happens. Greasy, high-protein, and fatty foods work best because they take longer to digest.
- Speed of drinking. Gulping drinks or consuming several in a short window overwhelms your liver’s processing capacity, causing alcohol to accumulate in your blood faster than it can be cleared.
- Medications. Mixing alcohol with certain drugs can change how both substances are processed, potentially increasing the effects and extending how long alcohol impacts your body.
- Tolerance. People who drink regularly may develop tolerance, meaning they feel less impaired at the same BAC. But tolerance does not change how quickly your liver eliminates alcohol. You can feel sober while still having a high BAC.
- Fatigue and stress. Physical or emotional exhaustion can increase alcohol’s impairing effects, though the actual elimination rate stays roughly the same.
Blood Tests vs. Other Detection Methods
A blood test can detect alcohol for up to 12 hours after drinking. But other testing methods have different windows, which matters if you’re facing a workplace screening, legal test, or medical evaluation.
- Breath. Breathalyzers can detect alcohol for 12 to 24 hours after drinking.
- Urine. Standard urine tests pick up alcohol for 12 to 24 hours with moderate use. After heavy drinking, more advanced urine screens can detect alcohol byproducts for 72 hours or longer.
- Saliva. Saliva tests work for up to 12 hours.
- Hair. Hair follicle tests can detect alcohol use for up to 90 days, though they measure patterns of use rather than a single episode.
Blood testing is the most precise method for measuring current BAC, which is why it’s commonly used in medical and legal settings. But it has the shortest detection window of any standard test. If your concern is a test days after drinking, urine or hair testing is what would flag it.
Legal BAC Limits and What They Mean
In the United States, the legal BAC limit for driving is 0.08%, a threshold established federally in 2000. Most of the world sets a lower bar. About 54% of countries use limits between 0.03% and 0.05%, and several nations including Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Romania enforce zero-tolerance laws where any detectable BAC is illegal behind the wheel.
The U.S. limit of 0.08% does not mean you’re safe to drive at 0.07%. Impairment begins well below the legal threshold, and you can still be charged with impaired driving at lower BAC levels depending on your state. For a 160-pound man, just two drinks in an hour can push BAC to around 0.04%, enough to affect reaction time and judgment even if it’s technically legal.
Given the 0.015-per-hour elimination rate, a person who reaches 0.08% needs at least five to six hours before their BAC drops to zero. Reaching 0.15% after a heavy night out means roughly 10 hours of clearance time. Planning around these numbers is far more reliable than going by how you feel, since perceived sobriety returns long before your blood is actually clear of alcohol.
