How Long Does Alcohol Stay in Your Bloodstream?

Alcohol stays in your bloodstream for roughly 1 to 2 hours per standard drink consumed. Your body eliminates alcohol at an average rate of about 0.015% BAC per hour, which means a single drink that raises your blood alcohol to 0.03% could be fully cleared in about 2 hours, while a night of heavier drinking that pushes your BAC to 0.08% or higher could take 5 to 6 hours or more to leave your blood entirely.

That said, a blood test can detect traces of alcohol for up to 6 to 12 hours after your last drink, and other types of tests can pick it up even longer. The exact timeline depends on how much you drank, your body size, your sex, and whether you had food in your stomach.

How Fast Your Body Clears Alcohol

Your liver does the heavy lifting. It uses an enzyme that converts alcohol into a toxic intermediate compound called acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen), which is then quickly broken down further into acetate, and eventually into water and carbon dioxide that your body easily eliminates. This process runs at a fairly fixed speed. The average person clears about 0.015% BAC per hour, though the realistic range falls between 0.01% and 0.02% per hour depending on individual factors.

That fixed rate is the key detail most people miss. Unlike many other substances, alcohol doesn’t leave your system faster just because you drink coffee, take a cold shower, or eat food after the fact. Once alcohol is in your blood, your liver processes it at its own pace. One standard drink raises the average person’s BAC by roughly 0.01% to 0.03%, so you can estimate your clearance time by dividing your peak BAC by 0.015.

For a practical example: if you have four drinks over two hours and your BAC reaches around 0.08%, it will take approximately 5 to 6 hours from that peak for your blood alcohol to drop back to zero. If your BAC climbs to 0.15% after a night of heavy drinking, you could still have alcohol in your bloodstream 10 hours later.

When BAC Peaks After Drinking

Your blood alcohol level doesn’t peak the moment you finish a drink. Alcohol has to be absorbed through your stomach and small intestine first. A Johns Hopkins study that measured BAC in healthy men after consuming equivalent amounts of alcohol found that blood alcohol peaked at 36 minutes after drinking vodka with tonic, 54 minutes after wine, and 62 minutes after beer. Stronger drinks are absorbed faster because they pass through the stomach more quickly.

Food makes a significant difference. Alcohol is absorbed much faster on an empty stomach than a full one, and solid meals slow absorption more than liquid ones. Eating before or while drinking delays gastric emptying, which means alcohol reaches your bloodstream more gradually and your peak BAC ends up lower than it would on an empty stomach. Interestingly, eating may also slightly increase the rate your liver processes alcohol, giving you a double benefit.

What Affects Your Personal Timeline

Several biological factors shift how quickly alcohol hits your blood and how fast it leaves:

  • Sex: Women generally reach higher blood alcohol levels than men after drinking the same amount, even at the same body weight. This is partly because women carry a lower proportion of body water, so alcohol is more concentrated. Men tend to have higher elimination rates, likely due to greater lean body mass and larger liver volume.
  • Body size and composition: More body water means alcohol is more diluted. A larger person with more lean mass will typically have a lower BAC from the same number of drinks than a smaller person.
  • Age: As you get older, lean body mass decreases and body fat increases. Since alcohol distributes primarily into body water, older adults tend to reach higher blood alcohol levels than younger adults given the same dose relative to body weight.
  • Drinking history: Heavy, regular drinkers develop a form of chemical tolerance. Research from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs found that heavy drinkers’ breath alcohol concentrations decreased faster after drinking compared to earlier tests, supporting the idea that chronic drinkers absorb and metabolize alcohol more quickly. Their brains also adapt at the cellular level, changing sensitivity to alcohol’s effects. This doesn’t mean heavy drinkers are safer; it means they may feel less impaired while still having dangerously high BAC levels.

When you drink heavily or frequently, your liver also activates a backup enzyme system that only kicks in at high alcohol loads. This secondary pathway helps process alcohol faster but generates more harmful byproducts in the process.

Detection Windows Beyond Blood

Blood tests detect alcohol for about 6 to 12 hours after your last drink, making them useful only for recent consumption. But alcohol leaves other traces in your body that last much longer:

  • Breath tests: 12 to 24 hours
  • Standard urine tests: 12 to 24 hours
  • EtG urine tests: up to 72 hours (these detect a metabolic byproduct rather than alcohol itself)
  • Hair tests: up to 90 days

If you’re concerned about a workplace screening or legal test, the type of test matters enormously. A standard breathalyzer or blood draw after 12 hours will likely come back clean for moderate drinking. An EtG urine test, on the other hand, can flag alcohol use from three days earlier.

BAC Levels and What They Feel Like

Understanding the numbers helps put your clearance timeline in context. At 0.02% BAC, you’ll feel slightly relaxed with subtle changes in mood and a minor decline in your ability to track moving objects. At 0.05%, judgment becomes noticeably impaired, coordination drops, and you may have trouble focusing your eyes. At 0.08%, the legal driving limit in 49 U.S. states, muscle coordination is clearly affected: balance, speech, vision, and reaction time all decline, along with short-term memory and the ability to process information. Utah sets its limit lower at 0.05%.

At 0.10%, reaction time and motor control are clearly deteriorated, with slurred speech and slowed thinking. At 0.15%, you may experience vomiting and significant loss of balance, with far less muscle control than normal.

These impairments don’t disappear the instant alcohol leaves your blood. Fatigue, dehydration, and disrupted sleep from a night of drinking can continue to affect your reaction time and judgment even after your BAC reads zero. If you had a BAC of 0.08% at midnight, your blood may be clear of alcohol by 5 or 6 a.m., but your cognitive performance at that point is still likely below your baseline.
