Alcohol leaves your body at a fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour. But “staying in your system” means different things depending on whether you’re talking about feeling sober, passing a breathalyzer, or clearing a urine or hair test. A standard drink in the United States contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol, which is roughly one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor.

How Your Body Processes Alcohol

After you drink, alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and intestines into the bloodstream. From there, more than 90% of it travels to the liver, where it gets broken down in a two-step process. First, an enzyme converts the alcohol into a toxic intermediate compound. Then a second enzyme breaks that compound down further so your body can eliminate it. Less than 10% of alcohol leaves through your breath, sweat, and urine without being processed by the liver at all.

The liver works at a remarkably steady pace. It can handle roughly one standard drink per hour, and there’s no way to speed that up. Coffee, cold showers, and exercise don’t help. Time is the only thing that clears alcohol from your system.

How long alcohol shows up on a test depends entirely on what kind of test is being used. Here’s how the major methods compare:

  • Blood: A blood alcohol test can pick up alcohol for roughly 12 hours after drinking.
  • Urine (standard): A basic urine test can detect alcohol for up to about 12 hours.
  • Urine (advanced metabolite test): Tests that look for alcohol byproducts rather than alcohol itself can detect drinking for up to 80 hours, depending on how much you consumed and your individual metabolism.
  • Hair: A hair follicle test can reveal alcohol use from 1 to 6 months back, though most results cover a 3-to-6-month window since people regularly cut or trim their hair.

The advanced urine test is worth understanding in more detail. Rather than looking for alcohol directly, it detects a metabolite your body produces while breaking alcohol down. This byproduct lingers much longer than alcohol itself, which is why the detection window stretches to roughly 80 hours, or a little over three days. These tests are commonly used in workplace screenings, legal monitoring programs, and treatment settings.

A Practical Timeline

If you have three standard drinks over the course of an evening and stop drinking at midnight, your liver needs about three hours to fully process the alcohol. Your blood alcohol level would reach zero around 3 a.m. But the metabolic traces tell a longer story. A breathalyzer could still flag you the next morning. An advanced urine test could detect the byproducts for two to three days. And a hair test could pick it up months later.

For heavier drinking sessions, the math scales linearly. Six drinks means roughly six hours of processing time from your last sip. Ten drinks means about ten hours. This is why people who drink heavily late at night can still be legally impaired when they drive to work the next morning.

Why It Varies From Person to Person

One drink per hour is an average, and several biological factors shift the actual timeline in either direction.

Body size plays a straightforward role. Larger people have more blood volume and body water to dilute the alcohol, so they reach a lower peak blood alcohol concentration from the same number of drinks. This doesn’t change how fast the liver works, but it means there’s less total work for the liver to do at any given moment.

Biological sex matters too. Women generally reach higher blood alcohol levels than men after the same amount of alcohol, even at similar body weights. This happens partly because women tend to have a higher ratio of body fat to water, which concentrates alcohol in a smaller volume of fluid. Women also produce less of the stomach enzyme that begins breaking down alcohol before it reaches the bloodstream.

Individual metabolism speed varies as well. Some people naturally produce more of the liver enzymes responsible for alcohol breakdown, meaning their bodies clear it faster. Liver health is a major factor here. A healthy liver processes alcohol more efficiently than one that’s been damaged by chronic heavy drinking or disease. People with compromised liver function can take significantly longer to eliminate alcohol from their systems.

Age affects the experience of intoxication in a more nuanced way. Younger adults (under 24) tend to be less sensitive to the sedating and coordination-impairing effects of alcohol, which can lead them to drink more before feeling drunk. This doesn’t mean they metabolize alcohol faster. It means they’re less aware of how impaired they actually are.

How Food Changes Absorption

Eating before or while drinking is one of the few things that genuinely affects how alcohol moves through your body. A meal in your stomach slows the rate at which alcohol passes into your intestines, where most absorption happens. The result is a lower and later-occurring peak blood alcohol concentration compared to drinking the same amount on an empty stomach.

This doesn’t reduce the total amount of alcohol your body has to process. You’ll still need the same number of hours to clear it. But the peak level you reach will be lower, which means less intense impairment and a smoother decline. High-carbohydrate meals appear to be particularly effective at slowing absorption. Drinking on a completely empty stomach, by contrast, lets alcohol flood into the bloodstream quickly and pushes your peak BAC noticeably higher.

What “Zero” Actually Means

Your blood alcohol level hitting zero and your body being fully clear of all alcohol traces are two different things. For most practical purposes, like driving or feeling normal, what matters is the blood level. At the liver’s standard pace of one drink per hour, you can estimate when you’ll be back to zero by counting your drinks and adding that many hours from when you stopped.

For testing purposes, the relevant window is much wider. If you’re facing a urine metabolite test within the next three to four days, even moderate drinking could produce a positive result. And if a hair test is involved, there’s no short-term abstinence strategy that will help, since the markers are physically embedded in the hair shaft as it grows.
