How Long Does Alcohol Stay on Your Breath for an Interlock?

Alcohol typically stays detectable on your breath for roughly one hour per standard drink consumed. So three drinks would keep your breath alcohol level above zero for about three hours, though individual factors like body weight, sex, and hydration can stretch or shorten that window. For ignition interlock devices, which are usually set to a threshold of 0.02 or 0.025 BAC (well below the legal driving limit of 0.08), even small amounts of residual alcohol can trigger a failed test hours after you stop drinking.

How Fast Your Body Clears Alcohol

Your liver processes roughly one standard drink per hour regardless of your body size. A standard drink means 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. The rate of alcohol elimination from your blood falls between 0.010 and 0.025 grams per deciliter per hour for most people, with the average around 0.015. That means if your BAC reaches 0.08 after a night of drinking, it would take about five to six hours to return to zero under typical conditions.

But here’s the catch for interlock users: your device isn’t waiting for you to hit zero. Most interlocks are calibrated to flag any reading at or above 0.02, which means you need to clear nearly all the alcohol from your system, not just get below 0.08. A person who stops drinking at midnight with a BAC of 0.08 might not reliably pass an interlock test until 5 or 6 a.m., and possibly later if their metabolism runs on the slower end.

Why Interlock Thresholds Are So Low

Most states set interlock fail points at 0.02 or 0.025 BAC, which is far below the legal limit. The interlock device uses an electrochemical fuel cell sensor that reacts specifically to ethanol. When you blow into the mouthpiece, alcohol in your deep lung air contacts a platinum electrode, generating an electrical current proportional to the alcohol concentration. These sensors are selective for ethanol and produce a linear, repeatable reading.

Because the threshold is so low, even a single drink can keep you locked out for over an hour. Two or three drinks at dinner could mean your interlock won’t let you start the car until well into the next morning. The safest approach is to allow at least one hour per drink plus an extra hour as a buffer.

Factors That Slow Alcohol Clearance

Not everyone metabolizes alcohol at the same rate, and several variables can push your clearance time longer than expected.

  • Body fat percentage: People with a higher percentage of body fat reach higher blood alcohol levels from the same amount of alcohol, because fat tissue doesn’t absorb alcohol the way water-rich tissue does. Two people at the same weight can have meaningfully different BAC readings based on body composition alone.
  • Sex: Women produce less of the stomach enzyme that begins breaking down alcohol before it enters the bloodstream. Combined with generally higher body fat percentages and lower water content, this means women typically reach a higher BAC from the same number of drinks and may take longer to clear it.
  • Dehydration and illness: Being dehydrated concentrates alcohol in your blood and reduces your liver’s efficiency at processing it. If you’re sick, hungover, or haven’t been drinking enough water, expect slower clearance.
  • Food intake: Drinking on an empty stomach causes a faster, higher spike in BAC. While this doesn’t necessarily change total clearance time, it can mean a higher peak that takes longer to come back down.

Mouth Alcohol and False Positives

Your interlock can also pick up alcohol that never entered your bloodstream. Mouthwash and breath sprays contain up to 30% ethyl alcohol, which is enough to register a positive reading if you blow into the device right after using them. The same goes for certain foods and medications that contain ethanol. However, this type of mouth alcohol dissipates within a few minutes since it isn’t being continuously supplied by your blood.

On rare occasions, foods with active yeast and sugar (like fresh cinnamon rolls or donuts) can produce trace amounts of alcohol in the mouth that briefly register on the sensor. Again, a second test a few minutes later will show a sharp drop or a clean reading, which distinguishes mouth alcohol from actual intoxication. A good rule of thumb: wait at least 15 minutes after eating, drinking anything, or using mouthwash before testing.

What Happens When You Fail a Test

If you blow over the threshold, the interlock enters a short lockout period of a few minutes before allowing you to retest. This pause exists partly to give mouth alcohol time to clear. If you fail again, the lockout period gets longer. Repeated failures without a passing test will prevent the vehicle from starting entirely.

Once the engine is running, the device requires rolling retests at intervals, typically every 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll need to provide another breath sample while driving (the device gives you enough time to pull over safely). If you fail a rolling retest or don’t provide a sample, the device activates an alarm, such as the horn honking and lights flashing, until you either turn off the ignition or provide a passing sample. It won’t shut off the engine while you’re driving, but the alarm makes it impossible to ignore.

Every failed test, whether at startup or during a rolling retest, is logged and reported to your monitoring authority. Multiple violations can result in extended program time, additional penalties, or device recalibration to an even lower threshold.

Practical Timelines by Number of Drinks

These estimates assume average metabolism and a 0.02 interlock threshold. Your actual clearance time may be longer.

  • 1 standard drink: Expect to wait at least 2 hours after finishing.
  • 2 standard drinks: Allow at least 3 to 4 hours.
  • 3 standard drinks: Allow at least 4 to 5 hours.
  • 4 to 5 standard drinks: Allow at least 6 to 8 hours.
  • Heavy drinking (6+ drinks): You may still register above 0.02 well into the next day, potentially 10 to 12 hours or more after your last drink.

These are minimums. If you’re smaller, female, dehydrated, or a slower metabolizer, add extra time. The only way to guarantee a clean test is to not drink at all in the hours before you need to drive. There is no way to speed up alcohol metabolism: coffee, cold showers, exercise, and food do not make your liver work faster. Time is the only thing that clears alcohol from your breath.
