A healthy liver processes roughly one standard drink per hour. That means if you have three drinks, it takes about three hours for your body to fully eliminate the alcohol. But “leaving your system” can mean different things depending on whether you’re talking about feeling sober, passing a breathalyzer, or clearing a urine or hair test. The detection windows vary dramatically.
What Counts as One Drink
A standard drink contains about half an ounce of pure alcohol. That’s 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, or 1.25 ounces of 80-proof liquor. These are all roughly equivalent in terms of how long your liver needs to process them, even though they feel different going down. If you’re drinking craft beer at 8% ABV or pouring generous wine glasses, you’re consuming more than one standard drink per serving, and your timeline stretches accordingly.
Why Your Liver Works on a Fixed Schedule
Most substances clear your body faster when there’s more of them in your bloodstream. Alcohol is different. At moderate to high levels, your liver breaks it down at a nearly constant rate regardless of how much is circulating. This is called zero-order kinetics: the primary enzyme responsible for processing alcohol gets saturated quickly, so it can only work through a fixed amount per hour. Think of it like a single-lane toll booth. No matter how many cars are lined up, only one gets through at a time.

Hair follicle tests operate on an entirely different scale. Alcohol markers typically show up in hair for 1 to 6 months, with most tests covering 3 to 6 months since people trim or cut their hair before older growth can be sampled. These tests reveal patterns of drinking rather than single episodes.
Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Clearance
Several biological variables shift your personal elimination rate within that 9 to 20 mg/dL per hour range.
Body composition and sex. Women generally have less total body water than men, which means alcohol is more concentrated in their blood after the same number of drinks. This doesn’t necessarily mean women metabolize alcohol more slowly, but they reach higher peak levels, so total clearance takes longer from the same starting dose.
Age. Older adults actually tend to eliminate alcohol slightly faster than younger people, not slower. That’s a substantial difference and one of the most effective ways to help your body process alcohol faster.
Liver disease. You might assume that people with liver cirrhosis process alcohol much more slowly. The research is actually more nuanced. Studies comparing cirrhotic patients to healthy individuals have found no compelling evidence that elimination rates are dramatically different. The typical range of 9 to 20 mg/dL per hour appears to hold for most cirrhotic patients, though individual variation exists.
What Doesn’t Help You Sober Up Faster
Coffee, cold showers, and exercise are the classic “sober up” tricks, and none of them meaningfully accelerate alcohol metabolism. Caffeine may make you feel more alert, masking the sedating effects of alcohol, but feeling awake is not the same as being sober. One animal study found that a specific low dose of caffeine slightly increased alcohol elimination in rats, but the effect was highly dose-specific and hasn’t translated into practical advice for humans.
