How Your Body Processes Alcohol
Nearly all the alcohol you drink is broken down in your liver through a two-step process. First, an enzyme converts ethanol into a compound called acetaldehyde, which is highly toxic and a known carcinogen. A second enzyme then quickly converts acetaldehyde into acetate, a relatively harmless substance your body can use for energy or excrete. This process happens at a steady, predictable pace. Your liver can only handle so much at once, so when you drink faster than your liver can work, alcohol accumulates in your blood.
The actual metabolism rate varies between 10 and 30 mg/dL per hour depending on factors like liver size and genetics, but for most healthy adults, it centers around 15 mg/dL per hour. You can’t speed this up. Your liver sets the pace, and it doesn’t care how badly you want to sober up.
Rough Timelines by Number of Drinks
A standard drink in the U.S. contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That’s one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor. Using the average elimination rate, here’s approximately how long it takes for alcohol to fully clear your blood:
- 1 drink: 1 to 2 hours
- 3 drinks: 3 to 5 hours
- 5 drinks: 6 to 8 hours
- 8 drinks: 10 to 13 hours
- 10+ drinks: 14 hours or more
These are estimates for a person of average weight with a healthy liver. If you’re smaller, female, or drank on an empty stomach, your BAC likely peaked higher, meaning clearance takes longer even though the hourly elimination rate stays roughly the same.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Alcohol leaving your blood and alcohol being undetectable on a test are two different things. Your body produces byproducts during metabolism that linger well after you feel sober. The detection window depends entirely on what’s being tested:
- Blood: up to 12 hours
- Breath: 12 to 24 hours
- Saliva: up to 12 hours
- Standard urine test: 12 to 24 hours
- EtG urine test: 48 hours after a few drinks, 72 hours or longer after heavy drinking

The EtG (ethyl glucuronide) urine test deserves special attention because it’s the one most commonly used in workplace and legal monitoring programs. It doesn’t detect alcohol itself but a metabolic byproduct that your body produces when processing ethanol. After a heavy night of drinking, EtG can show up in urine three full days later. Hair tests have an even longer memory, capturing patterns of use over months, though they’re typically reserved for situations where long-term drinking history matters.
Why Women Process Alcohol More Slowly
Biological sex is one of the biggest factors in how quickly alcohol moves through your system. Men have highly active forms of the primary alcohol-processing enzyme in both their stomach and liver. The stomach enzyme alone can reduce alcohol absorption by as much as 30% before it ever reaches the bloodstream. Women produce almost none of this enzyme in their stomach, and the version in their liver is less efficient. The result: given the same number of drinks, women typically reach a higher peak BAC and stay elevated longer.
Body composition plays a role too. Women on average carry a higher proportion of body fat and less water than men of the same weight. Since alcohol dissolves in water, less body water means higher concentration per drink.
What Actually Affects the Timeline
Beyond biological sex, several other factors shift how long alcohol stays in your system. Eating before or while drinking slows absorption into your bloodstream, which means your BAC peaks lower and your liver can keep up more effectively. Drinking on an empty stomach does the opposite: alcohol floods into your blood quickly, pushing BAC higher and extending total clearance time.
Liver health matters, but perhaps less than you’d expect. Research comparing people with healthy livers to patients with advanced cirrhosis found that only those with the most severe liver damage (indicated by jaundice) showed a significantly reduced metabolism rate. Patients with serious but non-jaundiced cirrhosis processed alcohol at a normal pace. So unless your liver is in truly poor shape, it’s likely working at or near the standard rate.
Age, body weight, hydration, and genetic variations in enzyme activity all contribute smaller shifts. People of East Asian descent, for example, commonly carry a genetic variant that makes acetaldehyde build up faster, which is why alcohol causes facial flushing in this population. The flushing doesn’t mean alcohol leaves faster; it means the toxic intermediate product accumulates.
Coffee, Water, and Cold Showers Don’t Help
Nothing you do after drinking will speed up alcohol elimination. This has been tested directly. An FDA review of multiple human studies found that caffeine, even at significant doses, had no meaningful effect on blood alcohol concentration. Caffeine can make you feel more alert, which creates the dangerous illusion of sobriety, but your BAC stays exactly where it would be without the coffee.
The same goes for drinking water, eating food after the fact, exercising, or taking a cold shower. These strategies might help you feel slightly better, but your liver is still processing alcohol at its fixed rate of roughly one drink per hour. The only thing that actually lowers your BAC is time.
How to Estimate Your Own Timeline
For a practical estimate, count your standard drinks honestly (a strong cocktail can easily contain two or three standard drinks, and a large glass of wine is closer to two). Then count forward from your last drink at about one drink per 60 to 90 minutes. If you had six standard drinks and your last one was at midnight, your body likely won’t finish processing all the alcohol until 6:00 to 9:00 a.m.
If you’re concerned about a drug test rather than driving, add a buffer. Standard urine and blood tests can pick up alcohol for about 12 hours, but EtG urine tests can flag you for two to three days after heavy drinking. And if a hair follicle test is on the table, there’s no short-term strategy that will help: it captures months of history in a single strand.
