An egg survives for about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, but its best chance of being fertilized is within the first 4 to 6 hours. After that narrow window, the egg begins to degrade rapidly, and by 24 hours it’s no longer viable. This is why the timing of intercourse relative to ovulation matters so much for conception.
The Egg’s Lifespan After Release
Once an egg is released from the ovary, it enters the fallopian tube and waits for sperm. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists puts the egg’s survival time at about 24 hours, but that number is the outer limit, not the sweet spot. The highest pregnancy rates occur when sperm meets the egg within 4 to 6 hours of ovulation. One large overview of conception studies estimated the egg’s functional lifespan at roughly 0.7 days, or about 17 hours.
This means the egg’s fertility isn’t a light switch that stays on for a full day and then flips off. It’s more like a dimmer that starts fading almost immediately. An egg fertilized 2 hours after ovulation has better odds of developing normally than one fertilized 18 hours later.
Why the Egg Deteriorates So Quickly
The moment an egg is released, a biological clock starts ticking. Within hours, several things go wrong at the cellular level. The egg’s protective outer shell (called the zona pellucida) begins to harden, making it physically harder for sperm to penetrate. This hardening happens because the egg prematurely releases the same chemical packets it would normally use after fertilization to block additional sperm.
Inside the egg, energy reserves drop as stored fuel gets depleted. At the same time, protective molecules that guard against oxidative damage decline, while harmful free radicals increase. The internal scaffolding that holds chromosomes in place starts to break down, which can cause chromosomes to separate unevenly. This is a major reason why eggs fertilized late in their lifespan carry a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
The egg’s ability to handle calcium signaling, which is critical for activating properly at fertilization, also deteriorates. Aged eggs show faster but weaker calcium pulses compared to fresh ones, which can lead to abnormal activation and failed development. All of these changes compound over just a few hours, which is why the window is so short.
Sperm Live Much Longer Than the Egg
While the egg lasts less than a day, sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for 3 to 5 days. Some sperm have a small probability of remaining viable for nearly a week, though survival beyond 4 or 5 days is rare. This asymmetry is what creates the broader fertile window: you can conceive from intercourse that happened up to 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after.
Conception probabilities are significantly above zero from five days before ovulation through the day of ovulation itself. The most fertile days are the two to three days leading up to ovulation, because sperm are already waiting in the fallopian tubes when the egg arrives. Having intercourse after ovulation is a much tighter gamble since it depends on sperm reaching the egg before those 12 to 24 hours expire, and sperm need several hours to travel through the reproductive tract and undergo the changes that allow them to fertilize.
How to Tell When Ovulation Happens
Knowing the egg’s short lifespan only helps if you can pinpoint when ovulation actually occurs, and that’s harder than it sounds. The hormonal surge that triggers ovulation begins, on average, about 34 hours before the egg is released, but this varies widely between individuals, ranging from 22 to 56 hours. This means two people using the same ovulation predictor kit could ovulate at very different times after getting a positive result.
Cervical mucus offers another clue. The last day you notice clear, stretchy, egg-white-consistency mucus is called the “peak day.” Once you identify it, fertility drops sharply over the following three days. The challenge is that you can only identify the peak day in hindsight, after the mucus has already changed back to thicker or drier.
Basal body temperature tracking has a similar limitation. Your temperature typically rises about 8 hours after ovulation and crosses above a baseline within roughly 24 to 36 hours. By the time you see a sustained temperature shift on your chart, the egg is likely already gone. This makes temperature tracking useful for confirming that ovulation occurred and predicting patterns across cycles, but not for catching the egg in real time.
What Happens If the Egg Is Fertilized in Time
When sperm reaches the egg within that narrow window and fertilization succeeds, the resulting cell begins dividing as it travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. This journey takes about a week. Around six days after fertilization, the developing embryo implants into the uterine lining, which marks the true beginning of pregnancy.
If fertilization doesn’t happen within 12 to 24 hours, the egg dissolves and is absorbed by the body. Progesterone levels eventually drop, the uterine lining sheds, and menstruation begins roughly two weeks later. There’s no second chance with the same egg. Each cycle typically releases just one, and once it’s gone, the next opportunity comes with the next ovulation.
Practical Timing for Conception
Because the egg’s fertile life is so brief, the most effective strategy for conception is having sperm already present in the fallopian tubes before ovulation occurs. This means the days leading up to ovulation are more important than the day after. Intercourse every one to two days during the five-day window before expected ovulation gives sperm the best chance of being in the right place at the right time.
Waiting until you’re sure ovulation has happened often means waiting too long. The combination of a short-lived egg and long-lived sperm is why fertility experts consistently emphasize the days before ovulation rather than the day after. If you’re trying to conceive, think of it less as catching the egg and more as positioning sperm to be ready when the egg arrives.
