How Long Does Bute Last in Horses: Effects and Detection

Phenylbutazone, commonly called “bute,” provides pain relief in horses that typically lasts 16 to 24 hours per dose, depending on the amount given and whether the horse has been receiving it for multiple days. But “how long it lasts” can mean several things: how long it controls pain, how long it stays in the bloodstream, and how long it remains detectable for competition purposes. Each of those timelines is different.

How Long Pain Relief Lasts

After a single intravenous dose, bute’s pain-relieving effects last roughly 16 hours at a standard dose. That number extends with higher or repeated doses. In a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, horses receiving bute over multiple days showed significant pain relief lasting at least 24 hours per dose, likely because the drug and its active byproducts accumulate in the body with continued use.

Bute reaches its maximum therapeutic effect at a dose of about 2 mg/kg of body weight. Going higher than that doesn’t increase the strength of pain relief, but it does stretch the duration. This is why many veterinarians prescribe a “loading dose” on the first day and then reduce to a lower maintenance dose: the initial higher amount builds up drug levels quickly, and the lower follow-up dose sustains them.

The standard oral dosing recommendation is 1 to 2 grams per 500 pounds of body weight daily, with a hard ceiling of 4 grams per day regardless of the horse’s size.

How Long Bute Stays in the Body

Bute’s elimination half-life in adult horses ranges from 3.5 to 7 hours. That means every 3.5 to 7 hours, the concentration in the blood drops by half. After about five half-lives, the drug is functionally cleared from circulation, which puts the total clearance window at roughly 18 to 35 hours for a single dose in a healthy adult horse.

Foals are a different story. Their bodies process bute much more slowly, with half-lives ranging from 6.4 to 22.1 hours. This means the drug can linger significantly longer in young horses, increasing both the duration of effect and the risk of side effects.

Bute is broken down primarily by the liver. The process produces active metabolites, including oxyphenbutazone, which itself has anti-inflammatory properties. One important wrinkle: oxyphenbutazone can actually slow the elimination of the parent drug. At high or repeated doses, the liver’s processing capacity can become saturated, meaning the drug clears more slowly than its half-life alone would suggest. This is why bute can build up in horses receiving it for several days in a row.

Detection Times for Competition

Even after pain relief has worn off and the drug is no longer at therapeutic levels, trace amounts of bute and its metabolites remain detectable in blood and urine. These detection windows matter if your horse competes under any governing body’s drug rules.

In controlled studies, bute was detectable in plasma for up to 84 hours (3.5 days) after both intravenous and oral administration using sensitive laboratory methods. But regulatory bodies build in safety margins beyond that:

  • USEF (United States Equestrian Federation): Lists a 3-day detection time guideline for bute. No part of a dose, whether oral or injectable, should be given during the 12 hours before competing. The federation notes these guidelines don’t serve as a defense if a test comes back positive.
  • FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale): Sets a plasma detection time of 168 hours (7 days) after both IV and oral administration.
  • Canadian authorities: 96 hours (4 days).
  • Australian authorities: 120 hours (5 days).

A withdrawal period of 5 days is generally considered a safe minimum for performance horses, though FEI competitors need a full 7 days. If your horse has been on bute for an extended course rather than a single dose, plan for a longer withdrawal, since accumulated drug and metabolites take additional time to clear.

Risks of Extended Use

Bute is one of the most effective and widely used painkillers in equine medicine, but it comes with real risks when used for more than a few days. In a study where horses received bute at 4.4 mg/kg daily for 9 days, 6 out of 10 developed ulcers in the glandular lining of the stomach. The ulcers ranged from mild to severe, with an average increase of about one full ulcer grade on the scoring scale.

The bigger concern with prolonged use is damage to the right dorsal colon, a condition called right dorsal colitis. This can cause protein loss, diarrhea, and colic, and in severe cases it becomes life-threatening. Interestingly, the 9-day study above did not find significant colon wall changes at that duration, suggesting that right dorsal colitis is more associated with longer courses or higher doses. The risk climbs the longer bute is given and the higher the daily amount.

For horses that need ongoing pain management, keeping the dose as low as effective and using the shortest course possible helps minimize gastrointestinal damage. Some veterinarians rotate between different anti-inflammatory drugs or add gastric protectants when longer treatment is unavoidable.

Factors That Affect Duration

Several variables influence how long bute lasts in any individual horse. Liver health is the most important, since that’s where the drug is metabolized. Horses with compromised liver function will process bute more slowly, extending both its effects and its detection window. Age matters too: older horses and foals both tend to eliminate the drug more slowly than healthy adults in their prime.

Dose size and frequency also play a role. A horse that has been on bute for a week will have higher baseline levels than one that received a single dose, and it will take correspondingly longer for the drug to fully clear. Dehydration can slow elimination as well, which is worth noting for horses recovering from illness or competing in hot weather. If you’re planning around a competition deadline, always err on the side of extra time rather than cutting it close.
