But for horses competing under regulatory bodies, the practical answer is longer: most organizations recommend a withdrawal time of 5 to 7 days before competition.
Single Dose vs. Multi-Day Dosing
A single dose of bute clears faster than a course of treatment given over several days. After one dose, serum concentrations of bute and its breakdown products fall below the limit of detection by about 96 hours (4 days). In urine, the drug can be picked up by immunoassay testing for roughly 48 hours after a therapeutic dose, while blood tests can catch it for about 24 hours using standard screening methods.
The picture changes with repeated dosing. When a horse receives bute at 4.4 mg/kg once daily for five consecutive days (a common treatment course), detection times stretch to around 84 hours after the final dose using sensitive lab equipment. That’s 3.5 days just to fall below the analytical detection limit, not the same as being fully eliminated. The drug’s main metabolite, oxyphenbutazone, is also pharmacologically active and follows a similar clearance timeline, which is why testing protocols look for both compounds.
Competition Withdrawal Times
Different governing bodies set different withdrawal guidelines, and they build in safety margins beyond the bare detection window. The FEI (the international governing body for equestrian sport) recommends a detection time of 168 hours, or 7 full days, regardless of whether the horse received bute orally or intravenously. This applies even after a standard five-day treatment course at normal doses. Canadian authorities recommend 96 hours (4 days), while Australian guidelines call for 120 hours (5 days).
For U.S. competitions, rules vary by discipline and organization. USEF and state racing commissions each set their own thresholds. A published study evaluating the standard dose regimen concluded that a 5-day withdrawal period is a reasonable minimum for performance horses, but the FEI’s 7-day recommendation provides a wider buffer. If you’re competing, always check the specific rules for your discipline and jurisdiction, because a positive test result is treated the same whether the horse was medicated a day too late or a week too late.
How the Body Processes Bute
The liver breaks bute down into several metabolites, the most important being oxyphenbutazone, which has its own anti-inflammatory activity. Elimination happens through two main routes: about 55% of a dose leaves through urine within three days, and another 39% exits through feces over the course of a week. That urine-heavy elimination is why urine testing tends to catch the drug for a longer window than blood testing.
The elimination half-life of about 9.7 hours holds steady whether the drug is given intravenously or orally. Oral paste is absorbed well from the gut, so the route of administration doesn’t meaningfully change how long the drug lingers. What matters more is total exposure: a horse that received bute twice daily for a week has more drug to clear than one that got a single dose.
Does Age or Health Affect Clearance?
A common concern is whether older horses clear bute more slowly. A study comparing healthy horses aged 4 to 10 years with geriatric horses 25 years and older found no significant difference in how either group processed bute or its active metabolite. Healthy older horses do not appear to need longer withdrawal times based on age alone.
That said, the key word is “healthy.” Horses with compromised liver or kidney function could theoretically clear the drug more slowly, since those are the organs responsible for metabolism and excretion. Dehydration can also concentrate the drug in the bloodstream and slow elimination. If your horse has any underlying health issues, the standard withdrawal windows may not be conservative enough.
Toxicity Risk With Extended Use
Bute is one of the most commonly used painkillers in equine medicine, but it carries real risks when doses are too high or treatment lasts too long. At toxic doses (roughly 10 mg/kg daily, more than double the standard therapeutic dose), ponies developed oral ulcers, gastrointestinal ulceration, kidney damage, and loss of appetite within one to three weeks. Six out of ten ponies in one study died within 7 to 20 days at that dose level.
Even at therapeutic doses, prolonged use can damage the lining of the right dorsal colon and contribute to gastric ulcers. Ponies and miniature horses are more sensitive to bute toxicity than full-sized horses. Paste formulations given twice daily at 5 mg/kg have also been linked to a drop in white blood cell counts, suggesting that the total daily dose and formulation both matter. The standard recommendation is to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period necessary.
Practical Withdrawal Timeline
For a horse that received a typical treatment course of bute (4.4 mg/kg daily for five days), here’s a general timeline after the last dose:
