DMT is broken down extremely fast by the body, with most of it cleared from the bloodstream within minutes to about an hour after use. It’s one of the shortest-acting psychoactive substances known, and its rapid metabolism makes it nearly undetectable in standard blood or urine tests within a few hours. That said, the exact window depends on how DMT was consumed and what type of test is being used.
How the Body Breaks Down DMT
Your body treats DMT like something it needs to eliminate immediately. The primary enzyme responsible is monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), which is abundant in the gut and liver. MAO-A converts DMT into an inactive compound called indoleacetic acid, along with smaller amounts of other byproducts. This process is so efficient that DMT taken by mouth on its own never even reaches the brain in meaningful amounts, because the liver destroys it before it can get there.
This is why DMT is only psychoactive through certain routes: smoking or vaporizing it, injecting it, or drinking it in ayahuasca, which contains plant-based chemicals that temporarily block MAO-A and let the DMT survive long enough to reach the brain. That distinction between routes matters a lot for how long the substance stays in your system.
Detection Windows by Method of Use
When DMT is smoked or vaporized, effects begin within 10 to 15 seconds, peak around 5 minutes, and the entire experience lasts less than an hour. Blood levels drop off rapidly in parallel with the effects. Only a small fraction of the dose ends up detectable in urine, and that window is very short, likely a matter of hours at most.
Ayahuasca is a different story. Because the MAO inhibitors in the brew slow down the enzyme that normally destroys DMT, the substance lingers longer. Blood concentrations of DMT peak around 1.5 to 2 hours after drinking, and the psychoactive effects last 4 to 6 hours. Even so, the body still clears DMT relatively quickly once the MAO inhibitors wear off. You’d expect blood and urine to be clear within roughly 24 hours, though this hasn’t been precisely nailed down in large studies because DMT’s rapid metabolism makes it difficult to measure consistently.
Hair Testing
Hair is the one exception to DMT’s short detection window. Substances get trapped in hair as it grows, and DMT can remain detectable in hair for months or even years. Research analyzing hair samples from regular ayahuasca users has successfully identified DMT long after the last dose. However, hair testing for DMT is extremely uncommon and limited to specialized forensic settings.
Will DMT Show Up on a Drug Test?
Standard workplace and government drug tests do not screen for DMT. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s 5-panel test, which is the benchmark for most employment drug screening, checks for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines (including MDMA), opioids, and PCP. DMT is not on that list, and neither are other classic psychedelics like psilocybin or LSD.
Detecting DMT requires specialized laboratory equipment, such as gas chromatography paired with mass spectrometry. These are expensive, targeted tests that a lab would only run if there was a specific reason to look for DMT. In routine drug screening, DMT and its metabolites would not trigger a positive result, including false positives for other substances on the standard panel.
That said, if law enforcement or a forensic investigation specifically orders testing for DMT, the technology exists to find it, particularly in hair samples where the detection window extends well beyond what blood or urine can offer.
Factors That Affect Clearance Speed
The biggest factor is the route of administration. Smoked DMT is in and out of the bloodstream fastest. Ayahuasca keeps DMT circulating longer because the MAO inhibitors extend its life in the body. If someone takes a pharmaceutical MAO inhibitor for depression or another condition, the same principle applies: DMT would be broken down more slowly, and its effects and detectability would last longer.
Beyond that, individual variation in MAO-A enzyme activity plays a role. People naturally differ in how much of this enzyme they produce, influenced by genetics and overall liver function. However, no large-scale human studies have yet correlated specific factors like age, sex, body weight, or liver health with DMT clearance rates. The research gap exists partly because DMT is metabolized so quickly that capturing and measuring it in body fluids is technically challenging.
One complicating detail: your body actually produces tiny amounts of DMT on its own. Researchers have found naturally occurring DMT in brain tissue at levels comparable to other signaling chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. These concentrations are far too low to cause psychoactive effects, but they mean trace amounts of DMT in a biological sample aren’t necessarily evidence of drug use. This is another reason routine drug panels don’t bother testing for it.
Timeline Summary by Sample Type
- Blood: DMT is typically undetectable within a few hours of use. After smoked DMT, the window may be under an hour. After ayahuasca, expect several hours.
- Urine: Only a small proportion of a DMT dose ends up in urine. Detection is possible for a handful of hours but becomes unlikely within 24 hours.
