Hangxiety, the wave of anxiety that hits during a hangover, typically lasts up to 24 hours and peaks the day after drinking as your blood alcohol level returns to zero. For some people it resolves in a few hours; for others, particularly after heavy drinking, it can linger into a second day. How long yours lasts depends on how much you drank, your body size, your liver health, and whether you’re someone who tends toward anxiety in everyday life.

What Hangxiety Actually Is

About 18% of hangover-prone drinkers report anxiety as a distinct hangover symptom. It’s not just regret about what you said at the party (though that can pile on). Hangxiety is a neurochemical event, driven by your brain trying to rebalance itself after alcohol disrupted its signaling systems.

The temptation to drink again to quiet that rebound creates a pattern that gradually escalates both consumption and anxiety over time. Research on highly anxious individuals confirms they’re particularly susceptible to this cycle, as the temporary calming effect of alcohol acts as a powerful reinforcer for continued use in anxiety-provoking situations.
