A shallow burn that blisters but doesn’t damage the deeper layers of skin typically closes up in about two to three weeks. A deeper burn that still blisters but reaches further into the skin can take longer than three weeks, and some of these wounds require medical treatment to heal properly.
Why Burns Form Blisters
A burn blister forms when heat damages the top layer of skin enough to separate it from the layer underneath. The injury triggers inflammation that makes tiny blood vessels more permeable, and fluid leaks into the gap between the two skin layers. That pocket of fluid is the blister you see. The fluid itself isn’t just water. It contains growth factors and other molecules that help rebuild damaged blood vessels and support early wound repair.
Healing Timeline by Burn Depth
Not all blistering burns are the same. They fall into two categories based on depth, and the difference matters for how long you’ll be waiting.
Superficial partial-thickness burns damage the outer skin layer and the very top of the layer beneath it. These are the most common blistering burns, caused by brief contact with hot surfaces, scalding water, or sunburn severe enough to blister. The skin underneath is pink, moist, and painful to touch. These typically heal in about three weeks as long as the wound stays clean and protected. Burns in this category that close within 10 days generally leave no scar at all.
Deep partial-thickness burns extend further into the skin. They may look white or mottled rather than pink, and they’re often less painful because some nerve endings have been damaged. These burns heal in 14 to 21 days in favorable cases, but many take longer than three weeks. Burns that fall into this deeper category carry a meaningful risk of scarring.
What Affects How Fast You Heal
Location plays a role. Burns on areas with thinner skin, like the forearm or the back of the hand, can take longer to heal than burns on thicker-skinned areas. Blisters on fingers, palms, and the soles of feet also tend to cause more discomfort and limited movement, which can complicate recovery. Infection is the biggest threat to your timeline. A wound that gets infected will heal slower and scar more.
Age matters too. Children under 10 and adults over 50 heal more slowly and face higher complication risks from the same size burn. Overall health, blood circulation, and whether you smoke all influence how quickly new skin forms.
Should You Pop a Burn Blister?
The short answer for most people at home: leave it alone. Small, intact blisters under about 6 millimeters act as a natural bandage. They protect the raw skin underneath, reduce pain, and are unlikely to rupture on their own.
Larger blisters, especially thin-walled ones bigger than 6 millimeters, are a different story. These are likely to burst on their own, which raises the infection risk. Clinical guidelines from the British Burn Association recommend that healthcare providers remove the roof of these larger blisters to clean the wound, assess depth, and apply proper dressings. The same applies to blisters that have already ruptured or to thick-walled blisters on fingertips, palms, and soles that limit your ability to use your hands or walk. But this is best done in a clinical setting, not at home with a needle, because uncontrolled rupture introduces bacteria.
Caring for a Burn Blister at Home
For minor blistering burns, proper wound care is what keeps you on track for that three-week timeline. Cover the burn with a sterile non-stick gauze pad, the type coated with petroleum or a similar barrier so it won’t stick to the wound. Avoid dressings made of materials that shed fibers, since loose threads can embed in the burn. Change the dressing once a day.
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen help manage the discomfort, which is usually worst in the first few days. Superficial blistering burns are painful precisely because the nerve endings in the skin are intact and exposed. As new skin forms and the wound closes, pain gradually decreases.
Signs Your Burn Needs Medical Attention
Some blistering burns require professional care from the start. Burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over major joints should be evaluated by a healthcare provider regardless of size. The same goes for burns that wrap around a limb, burns caused by chemicals or electricity, and any blistering burn in a young child or older adult that covers a significant area.
Even a minor burn that initially seemed manageable can turn concerning. Watch for oozing from the wound that looks cloudy or discolored, red streaks spreading outward from the burn edges, increased swelling or pain after the first couple of days, and fever. These are signs of infection, and an infected burn heals much more slowly and scars more severely.
Scarring and Long-Term Skin Changes
Whether a burn blister leaves a scar depends almost entirely on how long it takes to heal. Burns that close in under 10 days generally produce no visible scarring. Burns that take 14 to 21 days carry some risk. Burns that take longer than 21 days to heal are at high risk for noticeable scars, and some of these wounds need skin grafting.
If scarring does develop, it follows a predictable arc. Scars typically appear within the first few months, peak in thickness and redness around six months, then gradually soften, flatten, and fade over the following year. Full scar maturation takes 12 to 18 months. During this period, the scarred skin also becomes less sensitive. Color changes in the healed skin, either darker or lighter than surrounding areas, are common and can persist for months before evening out.
