A fertilized egg typically implants into the uterine lining between 6 and 10 days after ovulation. The process itself takes about 4 days from start to finish, meaning the embryo doesn’t just arrive and lock into place instantly. It goes through several distinct stages before it’s fully embedded in the uterine wall and can begin signaling its presence to your body.
The Day-by-Day Timeline
After a sperm fertilizes an egg in the fallopian tube, the resulting cell begins dividing as it travels toward the uterus. This journey takes roughly 3 to 4 days. By the time it arrives, it has transformed from a single cell into a hollow ball of about 70 to 100 cells called a blastocyst.
Around day 6 after fertilization, the blastocyst makes its first contact with the uterine lining. For most pregnancies, implantation happens somewhere in the range of 6 to 10 days post-ovulation, with the majority occurring between days 8 and 10. The uterine lining is only receptive to an embryo during a narrow stretch of time, often called the implantation window, and if the blastocyst arrives too early or too late, it simply won’t attach.
What Happens During Implantation
Implantation isn’t a single event. It unfolds in three stages over the course of several days.
First, the blastocyst loosely positions itself against the uterine wall. At this point, the connection is unstable. Tiny finger-like projections on the embryo’s outer surface interlock with small bumps on the surface of the uterine lining, almost like two pieces of Velcro brushing against each other. This initial contact is called apposition.
Next comes a phase of stronger physical attachment, where the embryo locks more firmly onto the lining through increased molecular signaling between the two surfaces. Finally, the outer cells of the embryo begin to penetrate the uterine lining itself, burrowing into the tissue to access the blood supply beneath. Once this invasion phase is complete, the embryo is fully implanted and begins forming the early structures of the placenta.
Why Timing Matters for Pregnancy Success
The day implantation occurs has a surprisingly strong effect on whether the pregnancy will survive. A study tracking early pregnancies found that embryos implanting by the ninth day after ovulation had only a 13 percent chance of being lost. That risk nearly doubled to 26 percent when implantation happened on day 10. By day 11, the odds of pregnancy loss jumped to 52 percent, and embryos implanting after day 11 faced an 82 percent chance of failing.
This steep increase in risk likely reflects the health of the embryo itself. A blastocyst that takes longer to implant may have chromosomal abnormalities or developmental delays that both slow its progress and reduce its viability. The narrowing window of uterine receptivity also plays a role: after a certain point, the lining begins to break down in preparation for a menstrual period, making successful attachment increasingly difficult.
When You Can Detect a Pregnancy
Your body doesn’t produce the pregnancy hormone hCG until the embryo implants. Once it does, hCG levels begin rising, but they start extremely low and need time to build. Blood tests, which can pick up very small amounts of hCG, may detect a pregnancy as early as 7 to 10 days after conception. At-home urine tests generally need a bit more hormone to trigger a positive result, typically becoming reliable around 10 days after conception or later.
This is why testing too early often produces a negative result even when you are pregnant. If you implant on day 9 or 10 and test the next morning, hCG levels may still be below the detection threshold. Waiting until the first day of a missed period, or at least 12 to 14 days after ovulation, gives you the most accurate result with a home test.
Implantation Bleeding and Other Signs
Some people notice light spotting around the time of implantation, which happens when the embryo burrows into blood-vessel-rich uterine tissue. Not everyone experiences this, but when it does occur, it typically shows up about 7 to 10 days after ovulation.
Implantation bleeding looks different from a period in a few key ways. The blood is usually brown, dark brown, or pink rather than the bright or dark red of menstrual flow. It lasts anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, compared to the 3 to 7 days of a typical period. The flow is also much lighter, often just occasional spotting rather than a steady bleed. Some people also report mild cramping during this time, which can feel similar to premenstrual cramps but tends to be shorter-lived and less intense.
Because implantation bleeding shows up close to when you’d expect your period, it’s easy to confuse the two. The combination of lighter flow, shorter duration, and unusual color is the most reliable way to tell them apart before a pregnancy test confirms what’s happening.
