How Long Does It Take Alcohol to Leave Your Body?

Your liver processes alcohol at a fairly fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour. That means if you have four drinks, it will take roughly four to five hours for the alcohol to fully clear your bloodstream. But “leaving your body” can mean different things depending on whether you’re thinking about feeling sober, passing a breathalyzer, or clearing a urine test, and each of those timelines is different.

What Counts as One Drink

A standard drink in the United States contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That works out to 12 ounces of regular beer at 5% alcohol, 5 ounces of wine at 12%, or a 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof liquor. These all deliver roughly the same amount of alcohol to your liver, even though the glass sizes look very different. If you’re drinking a craft IPA at 8% or pouring a generous glass of wine, you’re consuming more than one standard drink per serving, which extends the timeline.

Why Your Liver Sets the Pace

Your liver does nearly all the heavy lifting. It uses a two-step process: first, it converts alcohol into a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde (a known carcinogen), and then it quickly converts that into acetate, which breaks down into water and carbon dioxide that your body can easily get rid of. The key detail is that this process runs at a near-constant speed. Your liver doesn’t work faster just because there’s more alcohol in your system. It processes the same amount per hour whether you’ve had two drinks or ten. The only difference is how long the line is.

This is why you can’t rush sobriety. The liver is essentially a bottleneck, handling roughly one drink’s worth of alcohol every 60 minutes regardless of what else you do.

A Realistic Timeline by Number of Drinks

Using the one-drink-per-hour rule, here’s a rough guide to how long it takes for alcohol to clear your blood after your last sip:

  • 2 drinks: about 2 to 3 hours
  • 4 drinks: about 4 to 5 hours
  • 6 drinks: about 6 to 8 hours
  • 10 drinks: about 10 to 13 hours

These estimates assume you stopped drinking at a specific point. If you spread four drinks over four hours, your body is processing as you go, so the clock is shorter after your last drink. If you drank them all quickly, you’re starting with a higher backlog and it takes longer from that point forward.

Detection Windows Beyond Your Blood

Alcohol leaves your bloodstream in hours, but traces linger in other parts of your body much longer. How long it’s detectable depends on what’s being tested.

Breath: A breathalyzer can pick up alcohol for up to 24 hours after drinking, though 12 hours is more typical for moderate amounts. This is why a heavy night of drinking can still register the next morning.

Urine: A standard urine test detects alcohol for a relatively short window, but a more sensitive test that looks for a metabolite called EtG can find evidence of drinking up to 48 hours later. With heavier drinking, that window stretches to 72 hours or occasionally longer.

Hair: Hair follicle tests can detect alcohol use for 1 to 6 months, though most results cover 3 to 6 months since people regularly cut or trim their hair. This type of test is less about recent drinks and more about patterns of use over time.

What Slows It Down or Speeds It Up

Several factors influence how quickly your body handles alcohol, though none of them dramatically change the one-drink-per-hour baseline.

Food in your stomach is one of the biggest practical variables. Eating before or while drinking slows the rate at which alcohol moves from your stomach to your small intestine, where most absorption happens. This delay gives your liver more time to process alcohol before it floods your bloodstream, resulting in a lower peak blood alcohol level. You still have to process the same total amount of alcohol, but your body handles it more gradually rather than getting overwhelmed all at once.

Body size and composition matter because alcohol distributes through body water. A larger person with more water volume will generally reach a lower blood alcohol concentration from the same number of drinks. Women typically reach higher blood alcohol levels than men after the same amount of alcohol, partly due to differences in body composition and partly due to differences in the enzymes that break alcohol down.

Genetics play a real role. The enzymes responsible for breaking down alcohol vary from person to person. Some people, particularly those of East Asian descent, carry genetic variants that make the first step of metabolism very fast but the second step slow, leading to a buildup of that toxic intermediate compound. This is what causes facial flushing, nausea, and rapid heartbeat in some people after even small amounts of alcohol.

Liver health directly affects processing speed. A liver that’s been damaged by chronic heavy drinking or other conditions works less efficiently, meaning alcohol stays in the system longer.

Coffee, Cold Showers, and Other Things That Don’t Work

No amount of coffee, cold water, exercise, or fresh air will speed up alcohol metabolism. Coffee makes you more alert, but it doesn’t help your liver work faster. You just end up wide awake and still impaired. A cold shower might make you feel more alert temporarily, but your blood alcohol level stays exactly where it was. Only time clears alcohol from your system. There are no shortcuts, no supplements, and no tricks that change the fundamental rate at which your liver does its job.

How to Estimate Your Own Timeline

Count your drinks honestly, using the standard drink sizes above. A 16-ounce pint of 7% IPA is closer to two standard drinks than one. A large glass of wine poured at home is often 8 or 9 ounces, nearly double a standard serving. Once you have a realistic count, figure roughly one hour per drink from the time you stop. If you had six standard drinks and stopped at midnight, you’re looking at approximately 6 a.m. before your blood alcohol returns to zero. And remember that “zero on a blood test” and “completely undetectable on all tests” are two different things, since urine and hair tests have much longer windows.
