For most people, the body clears alcohol at a fixed rate of about 0.015% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) per hour, which works out to roughly one standard drink every 60 to 90 minutes. That rate is largely set by your liver and can’t be sped up. So a single drink takes about 1.5 to 3 hours to fully leave your bloodstream, while a night of heavier drinking can take well into the next day.
How Fast Your Body Processes Alcohol
Your liver does the heavy lifting. It produces an enzyme that breaks down alcohol at a steady pace of about 0.015 grams per 100 milliliters of blood per hour. In practical terms, that means your BAC drops by 0.015 every hour, no matter what you do. If you stop drinking at a BAC of 0.08 (the legal limit for driving in most U.S. states), it will take roughly five and a half hours to reach 0.00.
This rate is remarkably consistent. Small amounts of alcohol also leave through sweat, breath, and urine, but those pathways account for a tiny fraction. The liver handles the vast majority.
What Counts as One Drink
A standard drink in the United States contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That’s the amount in:
- Beer: 12 ounces at 5% alcohol
- Wine: 5 ounces at 12% alcohol
- Malt liquor: 8 ounces at 7% alcohol
- Spirits: 1.5 ounces (one shot) at 40% alcohol
Many real-world servings exceed these amounts. A pint of craft beer at 7% or a generous pour of wine at a restaurant can contain 1.5 to 2 standard drinks, which means your body needs proportionally longer to process them.
Estimated Hours to Reach Zero BAC
Body weight and biological sex both affect how quickly your BAC rises and how long it takes to come back down. Data from the University of Arizona breaks this into practical estimates.
For men, one standard drink takes about 1 to 2 hours to fully clear, depending on weight. A 140-pound man needs roughly 2 hours, while a 240-pound man may clear the same drink in about an hour. For women, the timeline is longer. A 100-pound woman needs closer to 3 hours for a single drink, while a 200-pound woman needs about 1.5 hours.
These numbers scale up with each additional drink, since the liver can only work at its fixed rate. Three drinks for a 160-pound man could mean roughly 4 to 5 hours of processing. Four or five drinks on a night out could easily mean alcohol is still in your bloodstream 8 to 10 hours later, well into the following morning.
Why Women Process Alcohol More Slowly
Women generally absorb more alcohol and take longer to clear it than men of the same weight. The reasons are biological: women tend to carry proportionally more body fat and less water than men, and alcohol is water-soluble. Less body water means the same amount of alcohol becomes more concentrated in the bloodstream. Hormonal differences also play a role in how efficiently the liver’s enzymes work. The result is that a woman who drinks the same amount as a man of similar weight will typically reach a higher BAC and stay there longer.
How Food Changes the Timeline
Eating before or while you drink makes a meaningful difference, though not for the reason most people assume. Food doesn’t help your liver work faster. Instead, it slows down how quickly alcohol gets absorbed into your bloodstream in the first place. When you drink on a full stomach, your peak BAC drops significantly. Research on alcohol absorption found that eating a meal before drinking reduced the amount of alcohol that actually reached the blood to roughly 66% to 71% of what it would be on an empty stomach.
That lower peak means less total work for your liver and a shorter total clearance time. Drinking on an empty stomach, by contrast, lets alcohol flood the bloodstream quickly, pushing your BAC higher and extending the hours it takes to get back to zero.
Detection Windows by Test Type
How long alcohol shows up on a test depends on what’s being tested. Alcohol itself disappears from the blood and saliva within about 12 hours. Breath tests can detect it for 12 to 24 hours. Standard urine tests have a similar 12 to 24 hour window, but that extends to 72 hours or more after heavier drinking.
A more sensitive urine test looks for a metabolite called EtG, a byproduct your body creates while breaking down alcohol. After a few drinks, EtG can show up in urine for up to 48 hours. After heavier drinking, it can remain detectable for 72 hours or longer. Hair tests have the longest window by far, picking up alcohol use for up to 90 days.
Why Nothing Speeds Up the Process
Coffee, cold showers, exercise, drinking water: none of these reduce your BAC any faster. Coffee may make you feel more alert, but your liver is still processing alcohol at the same 0.015-per-hour rate. The Virginia Department of Forensic Science puts it simply: only the passage of time will sober you up.
This matters most the morning after heavy drinking. If you had your last drink at midnight with a BAC of 0.12, you won’t reach 0.00 until roughly 8 a.m. A big breakfast and a pot of coffee won’t change that math. You may feel functional well before your BAC actually hits zero, which is one reason so many people unknowingly drive with alcohol still in their system the morning after a night out.
Factors That Slow Elimination
Beyond sex and body weight, several other factors influence how quickly you clear alcohol. People with liver damage or chronic liver conditions process alcohol more slowly because the organ can’t produce enzymes as efficiently. Certain medications interfere with the same enzyme pathways the liver uses for alcohol, which can extend clearance times. Age plays a role too: older adults generally metabolize alcohol more slowly than younger adults.
Genetics also matter. Some people naturally produce more or less of the liver enzyme responsible for breaking down alcohol, which creates real variation between individuals. The 0.015-per-hour figure is an average, and your personal rate could be somewhat faster or slower. Still, even at the upper end of normal metabolism, the differences are modest. There’s no biological shortcut that cuts the timeline in half.
