This shorter time frame is common with fast-acting drops like tropicamide, which are frequently used to minimize patient inconvenience. During this period, the peak effects of light sensitivity and blurred vision are usually experienced, but they steadily subside as the drug is metabolized and cleared from the system.

However, the complete range for recovery can stretch up to 24 hours, depending on the factors mentioned above. When a longer-acting agent is necessary, or if the patient has lighter eyes, the effects of the dilation may be noticeable throughout the remainder of the day. In cases involving children, where stronger drops are used for accurate measurement of refractive error, it is not uncommon for the pupils to remain noticeably dilated for a full 24 hours or occasionally longer.

The primary side effects experienced while the pupils are dilated are photophobia, or increased sensitivity to light, and blurred near vision.
