Most bruises heal completely within about two weeks. A minor bump might fade in 10 days, while a deeper or larger bruise can linger for three to four weeks. The timeline depends on several factors, including where the bruise is, how hard the impact was, and your age.
What Happens Inside a Healing Bruise
A bruise forms when small blood vessels break under the skin and leak blood into the surrounding tissue. Your body then has to clean up that trapped blood, and the color changes you see on the surface reflect that cleanup process in real time.
First, the leaked red blood cells break apart and release hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in your blood. Immune cells called macrophages move in and start breaking hemoglobin down into a series of pigments. Hemoglobin is converted into biliverdin, which is green, and then into bilirubin, which is yellow. The iron left over gets stored as hemosiderin, a brownish pigment. Each of these chemical steps produces a different color, which is why a bruise shifts through a predictable palette as it heals.
The Color Stages and What They Mean
In the first day or two, a bruise typically looks red or dark pink. This is fresh blood pooling under the skin. Over the next one to three days, deoxygenated hemoglobin turns the area blue, purple, or nearly black, depending on your skin tone.
Around days five through seven, you’ll start to notice green and darker yellow tones as biliverdin accumulates. By the end of the first week into the second week, the bruise shifts to yellow or light brown as bilirubin and hemosiderin become the dominant pigments. This yellowish stage is actually a good sign. It means your body is in the final phase of clearing the debris. From there, the color gradually fades until the skin looks normal again.
On darker skin tones, these color transitions can be harder to see on the surface, but the underlying process and timeline are the same. You may notice the bruise more by touch (tenderness or slight swelling) than by color change.
Why Some Bruises Last Longer
Several factors influence how quickly a bruise fades. The size of the bruise matters most obviously: a small bruise from bumping a table edge will resolve faster than a large one from a hard fall. The force of the original impact determines how many blood vessels break and how much blood leaks into the tissue, which directly sets the amount of cleanup work your body has to do.
Location on the body also plays a role. Bruises on the legs, especially the shins and calves, tend to heal more slowly than bruises on the face or arms. Blood pools more easily in the lower extremities due to gravity, and circulation is slightly less efficient farther from the heart.
Age is one of the strongest predictors. Research in forensic medicine has found that the transition to yellow (a key marker of late-stage healing) happens significantly faster in people under 65 than in those 65 and older. Older adults also bruise more easily because the skin thins with age, blood vessels become more fragile, and the fatty layer that cushions them shrinks.
Blood-thinning medications, including common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, make bruises larger and slower to heal. If you take a blood thinner and notice a bruise lasting longer than two weeks, that’s worth mentioning to your doctor.
What You Can Do to Speed Recovery
The most effective window for intervention is the first several hours after the injury. Applying something cold (an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, a bag of frozen peas) for 10 minutes at a time constricts blood vessels and limits how much blood leaks into the tissue. Less leaked blood means a smaller bruise and a shorter healing time. Elevating the bruised area above heart level works on the same principle, reducing blood pressure at the injury site.
One important nuance: cooling therapy works best within the first eight hours. After that initial period, ice can actually slow down the healing process by suppressing the inflammation your body needs to start breaking down the trapped blood. So icing a bruise on day three isn’t helpful.
Topical treatments have some evidence behind them, though the effects are modest. A 2021 review found that arnica (available as a gel or cream) showed significant benefit for bruising in 18 out of 25 studies examined. Vitamin K cream, applied twice daily at a 1% concentration, has also shown some ability to speed up bruise resolution in smaller studies. Neither is a dramatic fix, but both may shave a few days off the timeline if used consistently.
When a Bruise Isn’t Just a Bruise
A standard bruise, even a large one, is flat or only slightly raised and gradually changes color over the two-week window. A hematoma is different. It forms a firm, raised lump under the skin, is often quite painful to touch, and results from more significant trauma like a serious fall or car accident. Hematomas sometimes need medical treatment to drain.
Bruising patterns can also signal underlying health issues. Tiny pinpoint red dots (smaller than 2 millimeters) that don’t fade when you press on them are called petechiae, and they indicate a different kind of bleeding than a normal bruise. Frequent unexplained bruising, bruises that appear without any injury you can remember, or bruises that consistently take longer than two to three weeks to fade can point to conditions that affect blood clotting.
The practical threshold to keep in mind: if a bruise hasn’t shown meaningful improvement after two weeks, or if you’re noticing that you bruise unusually easily compared to what’s normal for you, it’s worth getting a medical evaluation to rule out clotting disorders or other causes.
