After surgery, you’ll typically wear a cast that includes the thumb for the first six weeks. At that point, most patients transition to a removable brace. If the surgeon placed a screw to hold the bones in alignment while the ligament heals, it stays in for three to five months before a second minor procedure removes it. How to Tell If It Might Be a Fracture

Wrist sprains and wrist fractures can feel remarkably similar in the first few hours, and it’s common to assume a broken wrist is “just a sprain.” A few signs point toward a fracture rather than a ligament injury:

  • A grinding, crunching, or cracking sound at the moment of injury
  • Visible deformity, where the wrist looks bent at an unnatural angle
  • Near-total loss of motion, especially if you can barely move your fingers
  • Numbness in the hand

Any of these warrants an X-ray. A fracture that’s treated as a sprain can heal improperly, leading to chronic pain and stiffness that’s much harder to fix later.

Factors That Slow Recovery

Several things can push your healing timeline past the typical window. Returning to sports or heavy lifting too early is the most common one. Pain is not always a reliable guide here. The wrist can feel fine during light activities but still have a ligament that isn’t strong enough to handle sudden force or load.

Ignoring a moderate or severe sprain is also risky. A partially torn ligament that never gets properly immobilized can heal in a lengthened position, leaving the wrist loose and unstable. Over time, that instability changes the way the small wrist bones move against each other, which can lead to chronic pain and eventually arthritis.

Poor blood supply to the wrist’s ligaments is another factor. Unlike muscles, which are rich with blood vessels, ligaments receive relatively little blood flow. This is part of why even a straightforward sprain takes weeks rather than days to repair itself. Smoking, diabetes, and older age can further reduce blood flow and slow the process.

What Recovery Actually Looks Like

For a mild sprain, recovery is mostly about patience. You’ll likely wear a splint for a week or two, gradually reintroduce normal activities, and find that grip strength returns on its own. Most people don’t need formal physical therapy for a grade 1 injury.

Moderate sprains often benefit from guided rehabilitation. After the initial immobilization period, a hand therapist can walk you through exercises that restore range of motion without stressing the healing ligament. You might start with gentle wrist circles and progress to light resistance exercises over a few weeks. Typing, cooking, and similar daily tasks usually become comfortable again around the four-to-six-week mark, though gripping heavy objects may take longer.

Severe sprains, whether treated surgically or with prolonged casting, require the most structured rehab.
