How Long Does It Take for Gas-X to Work?

Gas-X typically starts working within 30 minutes. The active ingredient, simethicone, works physically rather than chemically, so relief tends to come relatively quickly compared to other digestive remedies. How much relief you get and how fast depends on how much gas is trapped and where it is in your digestive tract.

How Gas-X Works

Simethicone acts as a surfactant, which means it lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles in your stomach and intestines. This causes smaller bubbles to merge into larger ones, making them easier for your body to expel through belching or flatulence. It doesn’t get absorbed into your bloodstream and doesn’t reduce how much gas your body produces. It simply helps the gas that’s already there move out faster.

This physical mechanism is why the relief window is relatively short. The simethicone reaches your stomach quickly, starts working on contact with gas bubbles, and you should notice less bloating and pressure within about 30 minutes. If the trapped gas is further along in your intestines, it may take a bit longer to feel the full effect since the simethicone needs to travel through your digestive system.

How Long the Relief Lasts

Because simethicone only works on gas that’s already formed, its effects are tied to transit through your digestive tract rather than a fixed duration in your bloodstream. Once it passes through, its effect is gone. If your body continues producing excess gas (from a meal still being digested, for example), symptoms can return. This is why the product allows for multiple doses throughout the day, up to a maximum of 500 milligrams in 24 hours.

If you’re dealing with ongoing bloating from a large or gas-producing meal, you may need a second dose a few hours later. Each dose works independently on whatever gas is present at the time.

Why It Might Not Feel Like It’s Working

Simethicone is effective at consolidating gas bubbles, but it has real limitations. It doesn’t stop gas from being produced, so if you ate a meal high in fiber, beans, or dairy (and you’re lactose intolerant), your gut will keep generating gas even as the simethicone clears what’s already there. In those cases, you may feel temporary relief followed by a return of symptoms.

It also won’t help with bloating that isn’t caused by gas. Fluid retention, constipation, and conditions like irritable bowel syndrome can all create a bloated feeling that simethicone can’t address. If Gas-X consistently doesn’t help, the discomfort may have a different cause.

Using Gas-X for Infants

Simethicone drops are widely used for infant colic and gas. The typical dose for babies is 20 to 40 milligrams, given up to six times a day. Timing varies by brand: some are given before feeds, others during or after. The onset is similar to adults, roughly 30 minutes, though fussy babies can make it hard to tell exactly when relief kicks in.

Simethicone is considered safe for extended use in infants, but if colic symptoms persist for several weeks without improvement, it’s worth discussing with a pediatrician since the fussiness may not be gas-related.

One Interaction Worth Knowing

Simethicone has very few drug interactions since it isn’t absorbed into the body. The notable exception is thyroid medication. Simethicone can interfere with absorption of levothyroxine, so the two should be taken at least four hours apart. If you take thyroid medication daily, keep this spacing in mind before reaching for Gas-X.
