GoLYTELY typically triggers your first bowel movement within one hour of drinking it, though some people notice effects as early as 15 minutes. The full process of clearing your bowels takes considerably longer, and in some cases, bowel movements may not begin for up to five or six hours. Understanding that timeline helps you plan your prep evening and avoid unnecessary worry.
When the First Bowel Movement Happens
Most people experience their first bowel movement within an hour of starting GoLYTELY. The solution works by pulling water into your intestines, which creates a large volume of liquid that essentially flushes everything through. Unlike stimulant laxatives that trigger muscle contractions, GoLYTELY relies on sheer fluid volume to move things along.
That said, responses vary. If you tend toward constipation or haven’t had a bowel movement recently, it can take longer. Some people don’t see results for five or six hours after starting. This doesn’t mean the prep has failed. Continue drinking the solution and clear liquids as directed. Walking around, stretching, or light movement can help get things going. Warm liquids between doses may also speed things up.
If you haven’t had any bowel movement by midnight the night before your procedure, contact your doctor’s on-call line for guidance.
How Long the Entire Process Takes
Once bowel movements begin, expect to be in and out of the bathroom for several hours. The goal isn’t just to have a few bowel movements. You need to drink the full prep volume and continue until your stool changes from solid to liquid and eventually becomes a clear, yellow-tinged fluid. Small particles in the stool are acceptable as long as it’s watery and not muddy or thick. Your stool won’t look like pure water because digestive secretions naturally add a yellowish tint, and that’s normal.
Plan to stay near a bathroom for the entire evening. Most people spend three to four hours actively passing stool after the prep kicks in, though this varies. If you’re doing a split-dose prep (more on that below), you’ll go through this process in two shorter rounds.
Split-Dose vs. Single-Dose Timing
Your doctor may prescribe GoLYTELY as a single dose taken the evening before your colonoscopy, or as a split dose where you drink half the evening before and half the morning of. Split dosing produces a cleaner bowel for the procedure, particularly for morning colonoscopies. A study in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy found that split dosing resulted in significantly better bowel cleanliness scores compared to drinking everything the night before.
For afternoon colonoscopies, both approaches work about equally well, and the single evening dose may be more convenient. Either way, there should be at least four hours between your last sip of prep and the start of your procedure. Finishing the prep too far in advance (more than six hours before the colonoscopy) can actually lead to poorer results, since new digestive secretions start to accumulate.
Why Some People Struggle to Finish
GoLYTELY is a high-volume prep, requiring you to drink a full four liters (about a gallon) of solution. Roughly 5% to 15% of patients don’t finish the full amount, usually because of the taste or the sheer quantity. Nausea affects around 20% to 30% of patients. Bloating, abdominal discomfort, and vomiting each occur in about 10% to 13% of cases.
If you’re struggling, slow down your pace but don’t stop. Drinking eight ounces every 10 to 15 minutes is a common recommendation. Taking a short break of 30 minutes can help nausea subside before you resume.
Tips to Make It More Tolerable
The single most effective thing you can do is refrigerate the solution before drinking it. Cold GoLYTELY is significantly easier to get down than room-temperature prep. Beyond that, several tricks help with the salty, slightly chemical taste:
- Use a straw. It bypasses more of your taste buds and helps you drink faster.
- Add flavor. GoLYTELY often comes with flavor packets (pineapple, lemon, or berry). You can also mix it with lemon-lime Gatorade or a clear flavor of Crystal Light.
- Chase each glass. A few sips of white grape juice or apple juice between glasses helps clear the taste. Avoid dark-colored juices, which can be mistaken for blood during the colonoscopy.
How to Tell Your Prep Worked
By the time you finish drinking the solution, your stool should be watery and light. The target is a clear, yellow-tinged fluid without solid chunks or muddy thickness. If your stool still looks brown and opaque after finishing the full prep, your bowel may not be clean enough for a good exam, and your doctor may need to adjust the plan.
Completing the full volume matters more than how quickly the prep starts working. Someone who doesn’t have their first bowel movement for three hours but finishes every drop can still end up with a perfectly clean colon. Someone who starts early but stops drinking because of nausea often doesn’t.
