How Long Does It Take for Herpes to Show Up?

Herpes symptoms typically show up 6 to 8 days after exposure, though the range spans anywhere from 2 to 26 days. Some people develop sores within 48 hours, while others don’t notice anything for nearly a month. And a significant number of infected people never develop noticeable symptoms at all.

The Incubation Period

After you’re exposed to herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2), the virus enters your body through small breaks in the skin or mucous membranes and begins replicating. The Cleveland Clinic places the typical incubation period at 6 to 8 days, while the Mayo Clinic narrows the common window to 2 to 12 days. Both ranges are accurate because individual biology, immune response, and viral load at the time of exposure all play a role in how quickly symptoms surface.

The outer boundary matters too. In some cases, it can take up to 26 days for the first signs to appear. This wide range is part of what makes herpes tricky to pin down. You might not connect a new sore to a sexual encounter that happened three or four weeks earlier.

What the First Outbreak Feels Like

A first herpes outbreak, called the primary infection, is almost always the most severe one you’ll experience. It often begins with flu-like symptoms: body aches, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and sometimes a low fever. These general symptoms can show up a few hours to a full day before any sores appear, which means the earliest signs don’t look like herpes at all.

Many people also notice a tingling, itching, or burning sensation in the area where sores are about to form. This warning phase, called the prodrome, can last up to 24 hours. It’s your body’s signal that the virus is active and moving toward the skin’s surface.

After the prodrome, the outbreak moves through a predictable sequence:

  • Blisters form as small, fluid-filled bumps, usually in clusters. This stage lasts 1 to 3 days.
  • Blisters rupture into open, shallow sores that may be painful. This also lasts 1 to 3 days.
  • Crusting and healing begins as the sores dry out and scab over. Without treatment, the full healing process takes 2 to 4 weeks from start to finish.

A newly acquired genital herpes infection can sometimes cause prolonged illness with severe ulcerations and even neurological symptoms like headaches or difficulty urinating. This level of severity is more common with the first outbreak and much less likely with recurrences.

Recurrent Outbreaks Are Shorter

Once the first outbreak heals, the virus retreats into nerve cells near the base of the spine, where it can stay dormant for weeks, months, or years. When it reactivates, the resulting outbreak is typically milder and heals faster, usually within 2 to 12 days. Recurrent episodes tend to produce fewer sores, less pain, and no flu-like symptoms.

During repeat outbreaks, the prodromal warning signs become more recognizable. That same tingling, burning, or itching sensation returns in the area where sores are about to appear, giving you roughly a 24-hour heads-up. Many people learn to start treatment at this stage, which can shorten the episode further.

Many People Never Get Symptoms

Here’s the part that surprises most people: the majority of those infected with herpes don’t know they have it. Roughly 25% of adults in the U.S. carry HSV-2, but only about 10 to 25% of them recall ever having symptoms. That means most carriers either have outbreaks so mild they go unnoticed or never develop visible sores at all.

This is a major reason herpes spreads so effectively. The virus can shed from the skin intermittently even when no sores are present, making transmission possible without any visible signs of infection. If you’re wondering whether you were exposed, the absence of sores within a month doesn’t rule out infection.

How Long to Wait Before Testing

If you have active sores, a healthcare provider can test them directly using a swab. This is the most reliable method when lesions are fresh and fluid-filled. Older, crusted-over sores are less likely to yield an accurate result because the virus sheds intermittently.

If you don’t have sores but suspect exposure, blood tests can detect antibodies your immune system produces in response to the virus. These antibodies take time to build up, though. The CDC notes it can take up to 16 weeks or more after exposure for current blood tests to reliably detect infection. If you test too early, you may get a false negative. For suspected recent HSV-2 exposure, repeating the blood test at 12 weeks after the likely date of contact gives you the most accurate result.

One important detail: a negative swab test on a healing sore doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Viral shedding is intermittent, so the virus may simply not have been active on the skin surface at the moment the sample was taken. Blood testing can fill this gap when clinical diagnosis is uncertain.
