How Long Does It Take for Sperm to Reach the Egg?

Sperm can reach an egg in the fallopian tube in as little as 30 minutes, though the full journey often takes several hours. But reaching the egg and being ready to fertilize it are two different things. The complete process, from ejaculation to a sperm that’s biologically capable of penetrating an egg, typically takes anywhere from 2 to 10 hours.

The Journey From Start to Finish

The distance sperm travel is only about 15 to 18 centimeters, roughly 7 inches, from the cervix to the fallopian tube. That sounds short, but for a cell that’s microscopic, it’s the equivalent of several miles. Sperm swim at roughly 1 to 3 millimeters per minute, which means their own propulsion alone would take hours to cover that distance.

They get help. Rhythmic contractions of the uterus and fallopian tubes create currents that carry sperm forward much faster than they could swim on their own. The fastest sperm have been detected in the fallopian tubes within 30 minutes, though most take considerably longer, and many never arrive at all.

Why Reaching the Egg Isn’t Enough

Even after sperm arrive near the egg, they can’t immediately fertilize it. Cervical Mucus Controls the Gates

Before sperm even reach the uterus, they have to pass through cervical mucus, and the consistency of that mucus plays a huge role in how quickly, or whether, they get through. For most of the menstrual cycle, cervical mucus is thick and sticky, creating a barrier that’s almost impossible for sperm to swim through. The Cleveland Clinic compares it to trying to swim through mud.

Just before ovulation, rising estrogen levels thin the mucus dramatically. It becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, often described as having an egg-white consistency. In this state, it actively helps sperm glide through the cervix and into the uterus. If you’re trying to conceive, this change in mucus is one of the most reliable signs that your body is creating favorable conditions for sperm transport.

The Egg’s Narrow Window

While sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for 3 to 5 days, the egg has a much shorter lifespan. After ovulation, a released egg remains viable for less than 24 hours. If no sperm reaches and fertilizes it in that window, the egg begins to break down and is eventually absorbed by the body.

This mismatch in lifespans is actually what creates the fertile window. Because sperm can wait for days inside the fallopian tubes, sex that happens 1 to 5 days before ovulation can still result in pregnancy. The sperm are already in position, with a continuously refreshing supply of capacitated cells ready to act when the egg finally arrives. The most fertile days are typically the two days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, because this is when the overlap between live sperm and a viable egg is most likely.

Putting It All Together

If you have sex close to ovulation, the fastest possible timeline from ejaculation to fertilization is roughly 2 to 3 hours: 30 minutes for the quickest sperm to reach the fallopian tube, plus the time needed for capacitation. In many cases, it takes longer. And if sex happens a day or two before ovulation, sperm may wait in the fallopian tubes for the egg to be released, meaning fertilization could happen a full day or more after intercourse.

The timeline also depends on factors you can’t directly control, like the strength of uterine contractions, the quality of cervical mucus, and individual sperm motility. Sperm with poor motility, whether from health conditions, lifestyle factors, or natural variation, take longer to make the journey and are less likely to complete it at all.
