Most STDs take between a few days and a few weeks to cause noticeable symptoms, but the exact timeline depends on which infection you’re dealing with. Some show up within five days, others can take months, and a significant number never cause symptoms at all. Here’s what to expect for each major STD, plus why waiting for symptoms is not a reliable strategy.
Chlamydia: 5 to 14 Days
Chlamydia symptoms typically start 5 to 14 days after exposure. You might notice unusual discharge, burning during urination, or pelvic discomfort. But here’s the catch: an estimated 77% of all chlamydia cases never produce symptoms. That means roughly three out of four people who are infected have no idea. This is why chlamydia spreads so easily and why routine screening matters more than symptom-watching for this particular infection.
Gonorrhea: 5 to 10 Days
Gonorrhea tends to show up faster in men than in women. Symptoms of infection in the male genital tract often start within five days after exposure, while symptoms in women tend to appear within 10 days. Men usually notice a thick discharge and painful urination. Women may have milder or more ambiguous symptoms like increased discharge, bleeding between periods, or pelvic pain.
Like chlamydia, gonorrhea frequently flies under the radar. About 45% of all gonorrhea cases are never symptomatic. This is especially common in women and in infections of the throat or rectum, which often cause no noticeable signs at all.
Herpes: 2 to 14 Days (Sometimes Much Longer)
The first herpes outbreak often occurs within two weeks after contracting the virus. That initial outbreak is usually the most severe: painful blisters or sores around the genitals or mouth, sometimes accompanied by flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, and body aches.
The tricky part with herpes is that the first outbreak sometimes doesn’t happen until months or even years after infection. Many people carry herpes simplex virus without ever having a recognizable outbreak, then experience their first episode during a period of stress or immune suppression. This makes it very difficult to pinpoint when or from whom you contracted it.
Syphilis: About 3 Weeks
The first sign of syphilis is a painless sore called a chancre, which often forms about three weeks after exposure. The sore appears at the spot where the bacteria entered your body, usually on the genitals, rectum, or mouth. Because it’s painless and sometimes hidden inside the body, it’s easy to miss entirely.
If untreated, syphilis progresses through stages. The chancre heals on its own within a few weeks, which can create a false sense that nothing is wrong. A secondary stage follows weeks later with rashes, fever, and fatigue. The infection is still very much active and treatable at this point, but the longer it goes undiagnosed, the more serious the potential complications.
HIV: 2 to 4 Weeks
Acute HIV infection generally develops within 2 to 4 weeks after exposure. During this early stage, some people experience flu-like symptoms: fever, headache, rash, sore throat, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms are easy to dismiss as a regular cold or flu, and they resolve on their own within a week or two. Not everyone experiences this acute phase at all.
After the acute stage passes, HIV can remain silent for years while gradually weakening the immune system. By the time more serious symptoms appear, significant damage may already be done. This is why early testing after a potential exposure is critical, regardless of whether you feel sick.
HPV: 1 to 6 Months (If Ever)
If HPV causes genital warts, those warts typically appear after an incubation period of 1 to 6 months. But most HPV infections never produce visible warts or any symptoms at all. The immune system clears the majority of HPV infections within a year or two without the person ever knowing they were infected. The strains that cause cancer are particularly silent, which is why screening through Pap tests and HPV tests exists for cervical cancer prevention.
Trichomoniasis: 5 to 28 Days
Trichomoniasis symptoms can appear within 5 to 28 days after infection. Women may notice a frothy, greenish discharge with a strong odor, along with itching and discomfort during urination or sex. Men often have mild symptoms or none at all, sometimes just slight irritation inside the penis or thin discharge. Because it’s caused by a parasite rather than a virus or bacteria, it’s easily cured with a single course of treatment.
Why Symptoms Alone Are Not Enough
The most important thing to understand about STD timelines is that the absence of symptoms does not mean the absence of infection. Across the board, STDs are frequently asymptomatic. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HPV, and HIV can all be present and transmissible without any outward signs. If you’re relying on symptoms to tell you whether you’ve been infected, you’re relying on a deeply unreliable signal.
Incubation Period vs. Testing Window
There’s an important distinction between when symptoms might appear (the incubation period) and when a test can actually detect an infection (the window period). These two timelines are not the same, and the testing window is the one that determines when you should get screened.
For HIV, the window period depends on which type of test is used. A nucleic acid test can usually detect HIV 10 to 33 days after exposure. A lab-based blood draw test detects it 18 to 45 days after exposure. Rapid tests and home tests, which look for antibodies, take 23 to 90 days to become reliable. Testing too early can produce a false negative, so timing matters.
For bacterial infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea, most testing is accurate within about two weeks of exposure. Syphilis testing can be falsely negative during the incubation period, which is why people who report contact with a syphilis-positive partner are often treated right away at the time of testing rather than waiting for results.
The time between infection and a positive test varies based on the infectious agent, where the body is infected, and your immune system’s response. If you’ve had a specific exposure you’re concerned about, getting tested at the right interval for each infection gives you the most accurate picture.
