How Long Does It Take for STD Symptoms to Show Up?

STD symptoms can show up anywhere from a few days to several months after exposure, depending on the infection. Some, like gonorrhea, may cause noticeable symptoms within a week. Others, like HPV, can take months or even years. The most important thing to understand: the majority of sexually transmitted infections produce no symptoms at all, which means you can’t rely on how you feel to know your status.

Chlamydia: 1 to 3 Weeks

When chlamydia does cause symptoms, they typically appear one to three weeks after exposure. But most people with chlamydia never notice anything wrong. This is especially true for women, who may carry the infection for months without discharge, pain, or any other sign. Men are somewhat more likely to develop symptoms like burning during urination or unusual discharge, but asymptomatic cases are still common.

Because chlamydia so often flies under the radar, routine screening is the only reliable way to catch it. A test taken two weeks after exposure will detect nearly all infections.

Gonorrhea: 2 to 8 Days

Gonorrhea is one of the faster STIs to show symptoms, usually within two to eight days, though it can take up to two weeks. Symptoms in men often include painful urination and discharge from the penis. Vaginal infections, however, are frequently asymptomatic, and infections in the throat or rectum rarely produce noticeable signs regardless of sex.

Like chlamydia, gonorrhea can be reliably detected with a test about two weeks after exposure.

Herpes (HSV): 2 to 12 Days

A first herpes outbreak typically appears two to 12 days after exposure, with six to eight days being the most common timeline. The incubation period can extend up to 26 days in some cases. A primary outbreak usually involves painful blisters or sores around the genitals, mouth, or rectum, sometimes accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

Not everyone gets a noticeable first outbreak, though. Some people have symptoms so mild they mistake them for razor burn, an ingrown hair, or a yeast infection. Others carry the virus for years before their first recognizable episode, making it difficult to pinpoint when they were exposed. Blood tests for herpes antibodies take longer to become accurate: about one month to detect most infections, and up to four months to catch nearly all of them.

Syphilis: 10 to 90 Days

The first sign of syphilis is a painless sore called a chancre, which appears at the site where the bacteria entered the body. This sore usually shows up about three weeks after exposure but can appear anywhere from 10 to 90 days later. Because the sore is painless and sometimes hidden inside the mouth, vagina, or rectum, it’s easy to miss entirely.

If the sore goes unnoticed and untreated, syphilis progresses to a secondary stage weeks later, often causing a rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Testing with a blood draw catches most infections within a month and nearly all within three months.

HIV: 2 to 4 Weeks

The earliest stage of HIV, called acute infection, generally develops two to four weeks after exposure. Symptoms at this stage can include fever, body aches, sore throat, and fatigue, which many people mistake for the flu. These symptoms resolve on their own, and the infection then enters a long period, potentially years, where it causes no noticeable symptoms at all while still damaging the immune system.

HIV testing timelines depend on the type of test. A lab-based blood test using a sample from a vein can detect HIV as early as 18 to 45 days after exposure. Rapid finger-prick tests take 18 to 90 days to become reliable. If you test negative shortly after a possible exposure, retesting after the full window period for your test type is important to confirm the result.

Trichomoniasis: 5 to 28 Days

Trichomoniasis symptoms appear 5 to 28 days after infection when they appear at all. About 70% of people with trich have no symptoms. When symptoms do develop, they often include itching, burning, or unusual discharge, particularly in women. Men with trichomoniasis rarely experience noticeable symptoms.

HPV and Genital Warts: Weeks to Years

HPV has the widest and least predictable incubation period of any common STI. Genital warts, when they develop, can appear anywhere from three weeks to many months after exposure. But most HPV infections never produce warts at all. The strains that cause cervical and other cancers typically produce no visible symptoms and can take years to cause detectable cell changes on a Pap smear.

There is no routine screening test for genital or anal warts. Cervical HPV screening through Pap smears can detect changes starting a few weeks to a few months after infection, but many guidelines recommend screening at regular intervals rather than in response to a specific exposure.

Hepatitis B and C: Weeks to Months

Hepatitis B symptoms, when they occur, appear an average of 90 days after exposure, with a range of 60 to 150 days. Many people with hepatitis B never develop symptoms during the acute phase. Hepatitis C follows a similar pattern: symptoms usually appear 2 to 6 weeks after exposure but can take up to 6 months, and most infections are asymptomatic.

Both viruses can cause serious liver damage over time without producing any warning signs, which makes testing critical for anyone with a potential exposure. Hepatitis B blood tests become reliable within 3 to 6 weeks. Hepatitis C antibody tests catch most infections by two months and nearly all by six months.

Why Symptoms Alone Are Not Reliable

The single most important takeaway is that most STIs are asymptomatic most of the time. The World Health Organization notes that the majority of the more than one million curable STIs acquired every day worldwide produce no symptoms. Waiting for something to feel wrong before getting tested means infections go undiagnosed, untreated, and potentially passed to others.

Incubation Period vs. Testing Window

These are two different timelines, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion. The incubation period is how long it takes for symptoms to appear. The window period is how long it takes for a test to accurately detect the infection. These don’t always line up.

For example, you could develop herpes sores within a week of exposure, but a blood test for herpes antibodies might not turn positive for a month or more. Conversely, a chlamydia test can detect infection within one to two weeks, even though you may never develop symptoms at all. If you’re getting tested after a specific exposure, the window period for your test matters more than the incubation period. Testing too early can produce a false negative, so timing your test correctly, and retesting if needed, gives you the most accurate result.
