THC can stay detectable in your system for anywhere from a few hours to 90 days, depending on the type of test and how often you use cannabis. A urine test, the most common screening method, picks up THC byproducts for up to 2 weeks in occasional users and potentially a month or more in daily users. The wide range comes down to biology: THC behaves differently from most other substances because your body stores it in fat tissue rather than flushing it out quickly.
Why THC Lingers Longer Than Other Substances
Most drugs dissolve in water, get processed by the liver and kidneys, and leave the body within a couple of days. THC takes a different path. It is highly lipophilic, meaning it has a strong affinity for fat. After you inhale or ingest cannabis, THC moves from the bloodstream into fat cells throughout the body, where it accumulates over time.
Your body slowly releases stored THC back into the bloodstream as those fat cells break down during normal metabolism. The liver then converts it into an inactive byproduct called THC-COOH, which is what most drug tests actually detect. This slow trickle from fat stores is the reason a heavy user can test positive weeks after their last session, and it’s why factors like body fat percentage, metabolism, and physical activity all influence your personal timeline. Hydration levels also cause THC-COOH concentrations in urine to fluctuate day to day, which means you could test negative one morning and positive the next even without using again.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Urine Tests
Urine screening is by far the most common method used by employers and probation programs. The standard initial screening uses a cutoff of 50 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). If that comes back positive, a confirmation test checks for THC-COOH at a lower, more sensitive cutoff of 15 ng/mL.
For someone who uses cannabis once or a few times, THC-COOH is typically detectable in urine for up to about 2 weeks. Frequent or daily users can expect much longer windows. People who use heavily for months or years sometimes test positive for 30 days or more after quitting, because the amount of THC stored in their fat tissue is simply much greater and takes longer to fully clear. The general ranges look like this:
- Single or rare use: 3 to 7 days
- Occasional use (a few times per month): 7 to 14 days
- Regular use (several times per week): 2 to 4 weeks
- Daily or heavy use: 30 days or longer
Blood Tests
Blood tests measure active THC rather than its metabolites, so they reflect more recent use. In someone who uses infrequently, THC drops below detectable levels in the blood within a day or two. For regular users, though, THC often lingers in the bloodstream for weeks, which makes blood testing unreliable as a measure of current impairment. This is one of the central challenges for roadside cannabis testing: a positive blood result doesn’t necessarily mean someone is under the influence right now.
Saliva Tests
Oral fluid testing is increasingly used for workplace and roadside screening because it correlates more closely with recent use than blood or urine. THC presence in saliva reflects what you’ve consumed in roughly the last 6 to 12 hours. After about six hours, THC levels in saliva tend to drop below 1 ng/mL, which is below the cutoff used by European impaired-driving guidelines. The federal confirmatory cutoff for oral fluid sits at 2 ng/mL, and the initial screening cutoff is 4 ng/mL. For most people, a saliva test is unlikely to catch use from more than 24 to 48 hours earlier, though heavy users may test positive somewhat longer.
Hair Tests
Hair follicle testing has the longest detection window of any method. Labs typically collect about 1.5 inches of hair from the crown of the head. Since head hair grows roughly half an inch per month, that sample covers approximately 90 days of history. Hair testing is designed to identify patterns of repeated use rather than a single instance, so a one-time session is less likely to trigger a positive result. Quest Diagnostics, one of the largest testing labs in the U.S., describes it as a “lifestyle test” for repetitive drug use.
Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Clearance
Two people who smoke the same amount on the same day can have very different detection timelines. The biggest variables are frequency of use and body composition. Someone who uses daily for months builds up a large reservoir of THC in fat tissue that takes much longer to deplete. A person with a higher body fat percentage stores more THC and releases it more slowly, while someone with a faster metabolism and lower body fat will generally clear it sooner.
Exercise can have a complicated effect. Physical activity breaks down fat cells, which temporarily increases the amount of THC released back into the bloodstream. Over time, regular exercise helps clear THC faster, but a hard workout in the days right before a test could actually spike your levels briefly. Hydration matters too: drinking large amounts of water dilutes your urine concentration, which may push a borderline sample below the cutoff, but labs check for overly diluted samples and may flag them as inconclusive.
The method of consumption plays a role as well. Edibles tend to produce higher and more sustained levels of THC metabolites compared to smoking, because the digestive system processes the drug differently and absorption is slower and more prolonged. Potency also matters: today’s cannabis products often contain much higher THC concentrations than those from a decade ago, which translates to more THC stored per session.
What “Detectable” Actually Means
A positive drug test doesn’t mean THC is still active in your brain or affecting your coordination. Urine tests detect THC-COOH, an inactive metabolite that serves only as evidence of past exposure. Your body continues excreting this byproduct for days after the psychoactive effects have completely worn off. This distinction is important: being “positive” on a urine screen means cannabis was in your system at some point in the recent past, not that you’re currently impaired.
Cutoff levels also mean that trace amounts of THC-COOH can exist in your urine without triggering a positive result. The standard 50 ng/mL screening threshold was set specifically to reduce false positives from very low-level exposure. If your concentration is at 40 ng/mL, for example, you would pass the initial screen even though THC metabolites are technically present.
Realistic Timelines for Common Scenarios
If you used cannabis once at a party and you’re facing a urine test, you’re generally in the clear after a week, and often sooner. If you’ve been using a few times a week for several months and just stopped, plan on at least 3 to 4 weeks before you’re confident about passing a standard urine screen. Daily, long-term users sometimes need 6 weeks or more.
For a saliva test with short notice, the window is much narrower. If your last use was more than 24 hours ago and you’re not a heavy daily user, you have a reasonable chance of testing below the cutoff. Blood tests fall somewhere in between, but they’re less commonly used outside of medical or legal contexts.
Hair tests are the hardest to beat on any timeline. Because they capture a 90-day window and the THC is physically embedded in the hair shaft as it grows, there’s no way to speed up clearance. The only factor in your favor is that hair testing is designed to flag repeated use, so isolated or very infrequent use is less likely to produce a positive result.
