How Long Does It Take for the Egg to Implant?

A fertilized egg typically implants into the uterine lining about 6 to 10 days after ovulation, with most implantations happening around day 9. The process isn’t instant, though. It unfolds over several days as the embryo travels down the fallopian tube, enters the uterus, and gradually burrows into the uterine wall.

The Implantation Timeline, Day by Day

After a sperm fertilizes an egg in the fallopian tube, the resulting embryo begins dividing while slowly traveling toward the uterus. It arrives roughly a week after fertilization. At that point it’s a hollow ball of about 200 to 300 cells called a blastocyst, and it still needs to complete several steps before it’s truly implanted.

First, the blastocyst has to “hatch” out of the thin protective shell that surrounded the original egg. This takes one to three days after it enters the uterus. Once free, the outer cells of the blastocyst make contact with the uterine lining, then release sticky proteins that bind to the surface. Finally, the embryo burrows deeper into the lining, establishing a blood supply. The entire attachment-to-embedding process spans roughly two to three days on its own, which is why the full timeline from fertilization to completed implantation is closer to 8 to 10 days for most pregnancies.

The Implantation Window

Your uterine lining isn’t receptive to an embryo at just any point in your cycle. There’s a narrow stretch, often called the implantation window, that lasts about 3 to 6 days during the second half of your cycle. In a typical 28-day cycle, this window opens around day 20 and closes a few days later. If the embryo arrives too early or too late, the lining won’t respond to it.

This is one reason timing matters so much for conception. The embryo’s development and the lining’s readiness have to sync up within a fairly tight range.

Why Timing Affects Pregnancy Survival

Not all implantation days carry the same odds. A well-known study from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences tracked the exact day of implantation in early pregnancies and found a striking pattern. Embryos that implanted by day 9 after fertilization had only a 13 percent chance of early pregnancy loss. That risk nearly doubled to 26 percent when implantation happened on day 10, jumped to 52 percent on day 11, and reached 82 percent for anything later. All three pregnancies in the study that implanted after day 12 ended in early loss.

The difference between surviving and non-surviving pregnancies was small, roughly one day on average (9.1 days versus 10.5 days). But that single day translated into a major shift in risk. Late implantation may signal that the embryo developed more slowly than normal, or that the uterine lining was already beginning to break down by the time it attached.

Implantation Bleeding and Early Signs

Some people notice light spotting around the time of implantation, though many don’t experience it at all. When it does occur, it looks different from a period. Implantation bleeding is typically brown, dark brown, or pink rather than the bright or dark red of menstrual flow. It’s also much lighter, more like occasional spotting or a streak on toilet paper, and usually lasts only a day or two. It doesn’t require more than a panty liner.

Because this spotting shows up roughly a week before your expected period, it’s easy to dismiss or mistake for an early period. There’s no reliable way to confirm implantation from bleeding alone.

When Pregnancy Becomes Detectable

Implantation is the starting gun for pregnancy hormone production. Once the embryo embeds in the uterine lining, your body begins producing hCG, the hormone that pregnancy tests detect. But levels start extremely low and take days to build.

A sensitive blood test can pick up hCG as early as 3 to 4 days after implantation. Home urine tests need higher concentrations and take longer. Highly sensitive tests may show a faint positive 6 to 8 days after implantation, but most home tests give reliable results 10 to 12 days after implantation, which lines up with roughly the first day of your missed period.

Testing too early is the most common reason for a false negative. Even the most sensitive home tests (detecting as little as 8 to 10 units of hCG per milliliter) only work once the hormone has accumulated enough in your urine. At very low concentrations, like 3 to 6 units, fewer than half of users get a positive result even on early-detection tests. Waiting until the day of your missed period, or a day or two after, gives the most accurate reading.

Implantation and the Start of Pregnancy

Medically, pregnancy doesn’t begin at fertilization. Since 1965, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has defined pregnancy as starting when the embryo implants in the uterine wall. This distinction matters because a large number of fertilized eggs never implant at all. Estimates suggest that 30 to 50 percent of fertilized eggs are lost before or during the implantation process, often without the person ever knowing fertilization occurred. Until implantation is complete and hCG production begins, there’s no pregnancy in clinical terms.
