How Long Does It Take for Triazolam to Wear Off?

Triazolam (brand name Halcion) typically wears off within 6 to 8 hours, making it one of the shortest-acting sleep medications available. Its half-life, the time it takes for your body to clear half the drug, ranges from 1.5 to 5.5 hours, with an average around 3 hours. That means most of the drug is out of your system by morning if you take it at a normal bedtime.

How the Drug Moves Through Your Body

After you swallow a triazolam tablet, blood levels peak within about 2 hours. That’s when the sedative effect is strongest. From there, levels drop relatively quickly compared to other benzodiazepines. Because the average half-life is roughly 3 hours, around 75% of the drug is eliminated within 6 hours, and the vast majority is cleared within 7 to 8 hours.

This is why Health Canada’s prescribing information specifically warns patients not to take triazolam unless they can get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep before needing to be active again. Taking it on a short overnight flight, for example, could leave you impaired when you land.

When Sedation Actually Stops

The sleepy, sedating feeling fades before the drug is completely eliminated from your blood. Most research on ultra-short-acting sleep medications like triazolam finds that cognitive function and performance return to normal within 6 to 9 hours after taking a standard dose. Driving studies have shown that impairment from this class of drug generally does not persist beyond 9 hours at recommended doses.

That said, “wearing off” doesn’t happen like flipping a switch. You may feel groggy for a stretch after waking, particularly in the first hour or two of your day. At standard doses, though, triazolam is specifically designed to minimize this kind of next-day hangover. Its short half-life means the drug and its breakdown products clear your system before your next dose, so carry-over sedation is typically minimal or absent.

Why It Can Last Longer for Some People

The 1.5 to 5.5 hour half-life range is wide, and where you fall in that range depends on several factors.

Age is one of the biggest. Older adults tend to process benzodiazepines more slowly, which is why the recommended starting dose for people over 65 is half that of younger adults (0.125 mg versus up to 0.25 mg). A slower metabolism means the drug lingers longer, increasing both the duration of sedation and the risk of grogginess the next morning.

Liver function matters too, since triazolam is broken down by a specific enzyme system in the liver. Anything that slows that enzyme system down will extend how long the drug stays active. Several medications are specifically contraindicated with triazolam because they block this breakdown pathway so effectively that triazolam levels can climb to dangerous heights. These include certain antifungal medications (ketoconazole, itraconazole) and several HIV medications (ritonavir, lopinavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir, darunavir). Paxlovid, the COVID antiviral, also falls into this category. If you take any of these, triazolam’s effects could last significantly longer than expected.

Grapefruit juice uses the same enzyme pathway and can modestly slow triazolam clearance, though not to the same degree as the medications listed above.

What Happens After It Wears Off

Because triazolam clears so quickly, your brain can notice the drug’s absence before morning. After about two weeks of nightly use, some people experience increased wakefulness during the last third of the night, essentially waking up early as the drug leaves their system. This is sometimes called “early morning insomnia” and it’s a direct consequence of the short half-life.

Rebound insomnia, a temporary worsening of sleep difficulty after stopping the drug, is also well-documented with triazolam. Studies confirm that abruptly stopping triazolam after regular use leads to a rebound increase in how long it takes to fall asleep. This rebound effect is temporary but can be uncomfortable enough that people mistakenly believe their original insomnia has worsened. Tapering the dose gradually rather than stopping suddenly reduces this risk.

Another notable pattern is increased daytime anxiety, which has been reported after about 10 days of continuous nightly use. This can feel counterintuitive since the drug is supposed to help with relaxation, but it appears to be related to the brain adjusting to the rapid on-off cycle of a very short-acting sedative.

Triazolam Compared to Other Sleep Medications

Triazolam’s 1.5 to 5.5 hour half-life makes it considerably shorter-acting than many other benzodiazepine sleep aids. For comparison, temazepam has a half-life of 8 to 20 hours, and flurazepam’s active breakdown products can persist for days. This is why triazolam is generally preferred when next-day alertness is a priority, and why it’s commonly used for single-night situations like pre-surgical sedation or dental anxiety rather than long-term sleep management.

The tradeoff is clear: less morning grogginess, but a higher likelihood of rebound effects and early-morning waking. If you find yourself wide awake at 4 a.m. after taking triazolam at 11 p.m., the drug’s short duration is the most likely explanation.
