For most healthy adults, food takes roughly 30 to 40 hours to travel from mouth to toilet, though the full range spans anywhere from 10 to 72 hours. Women tend to be on the slower end of that spectrum, with transit times that can stretch to around 100 hours and still fall within a normal range. The wide variation comes down to what you ate, your sex, your activity level, and how much fiber is in your diet.
What Happens at Each Stage
Digestion isn’t one smooth conveyor belt. Food moves through distinct zones, and each one operates on its own clock.
Your stomach works as a holding tank and acid bath. It empties about half its contents in 2.5 to 3 hours, with full emptying taking 4 to 5 hours. Liquids and simple carbohydrates leave faster. Fatty, protein-heavy meals stick around longer because they require more mechanical churning and chemical breakdown before the stomach releases them in small batches into the small intestine.
The small intestine is where most nutrient absorption happens. Food spends another 2.5 to 3 hours here on average (for 50% of contents to pass through), though the full journey through all 20-plus feet of it can take longer. By the time material exits the small intestine, your body has already extracted the vast majority of calories, vitamins, and minerals.
The colon is where things slow down dramatically. Transit through the large intestine takes 30 to 40 hours on average. This is the bottleneck. The colon’s job is to pull water back into your body and compact what’s left into stool, and that process simply takes time. This single stage accounts for the bulk of total transit time, which is why most of the variation between people comes down to how fast or slow their colon works.
Why Women Digest More Slowly
Sex hormones have a measurable effect on gut speed. In a study comparing healthy men and women, every stage of digestion was significantly slower in women. Gastric emptying took a median of 2.9 hours in women versus 2.4 hours in men. Small intestine transit was 4.4 hours versus 3.2 hours. And colonic transit averaged 1.5 days in women compared to 1.3 days in men.
Interestingly, this pattern shifts after menopause. Postmenopausal women showed faster small intestine transit than premenopausal women, suggesting that fluctuating reproductive hormones (particularly progesterone, which relaxes smooth muscle) are partly responsible for the slower pace during reproductive years. Women with higher body weight also tended to have faster small-bowel transit than leaner women.
Your Gut Has a Cleaning Cycle
Between meals, your digestive tract runs a self-cleaning program called the migrating motor complex. Every 90 to 120 minutes during fasting, a wave of contractions sweeps from your stomach all the way to the end of your small intestine, pushing out leftover food particles, dead cells, and bacteria. This “housekeeping” wave moves material four times faster than the gut’s resting state, and about half of the total flow through the small intestine happens during these brief, intense bursts of activity.
This is one reason spacing out meals matters for digestive comfort. Constant snacking interrupts the cleaning cycle, because eating resets the process. If you’ve ever felt bloated after grazing all day, the incomplete housekeeping waves may be part of the reason.
How Fiber Changes the Timeline
Fiber is the single most studied dietary factor in transit time, but its effect is more targeted than most people assume. A large analysis of 65 studies found that adding just 1 gram per day of cereal or wheat fiber increased stool weight by about 3.9 grams per day. However, the actual speed-up in transit only kicked in for people whose colonic transit was already slow, above 48 hours. For those individuals, each additional gram of daily fiber reduced colon transit time by about 0.78 hours.
In practical terms, if your digestion is already running at a normal pace, loading up on fiber won’t dramatically accelerate things. But if you’re consistently on the slow side, gradually increasing fiber from whole grains, vegetables, and legumes can meaningfully shorten how long food sits in your colon.
What Counts as Normal
There’s a wider range of “normal” than most people expect. Healthy bowel movement frequency runs from three times a day to three times a week. Both ends of that range are perfectly fine as long as you’re comfortable, your stools pass without straining, and there’s no sudden change from your personal baseline.
Total transit time up to 72 hours is generally considered normal. For women, transit times approaching 100 hours can still fall within an acceptable range. The key metric isn’t hitting a specific number of hours but rather consistency. A sudden, unexplained shift in your pattern, either faster or slower, is more meaningful than where you fall on the average spectrum.
How to Measure Your Own Transit Time
If you’re curious about your personal number, you can run a simple test at home. The most common DIY approach is eating a visible marker and watching for it to appear in your stool. Corn kernels work because they pass through largely intact, giving you an easy visual signal. Beets can also tint your stool a reddish color, though the timing is less precise because the pigment spreads.
Researchers have recently validated a more controlled version of this using blue food dye. The optimized method involves swallowing a capsule containing 60 milligrams of blue food coloring along with a couple of rice crackers and some liquid. You then note when blue-tinged stool appears. This “blue poo” test has been validated as a reliable, low-cost way to measure whole gut transit. The rice crackers help carry the dye through the stomach at a normal food pace rather than letting the capsule dissolve in isolation.
Whichever method you choose, eat the marker with a normal meal so it travels with food rather than on an empty stomach. Record the time you eat it and the time you first spot it. That gap is your total mouth-to-toilet transit time.
Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Digestion
Beyond fiber and sex hormones, several everyday variables shift your transit time in either direction. Physical activity stimulates colonic motility, which is why regular exercise is consistently linked to more regular bowel habits. Dehydration does the opposite: when your body is short on water, the colon pulls more fluid from stool, making it harder and slower to pass.
Meal composition matters at the stomach level. Fat slows gastric emptying the most, which is why a greasy meal can leave you feeling full for hours. Simple carbohydrates and liquids exit the stomach fastest. Caffeine stimulates colonic contractions, which is why coffee sends many people to the bathroom within 20 to 30 minutes of drinking it, though that rapid response is a reflex in the colon, not the meal you just ate arriving at the finish line.
Stress and sleep disruption also play a role. The gut has its own extensive nervous system, and psychological stress can either speed up transit (loose stools, urgency) or slow it down (constipation), depending on the individual and the type of stress. Travel is a classic trigger for slower transit because it often combines dehydration, disrupted sleep, changed meal timing, and reduced physical activity all at once.
