It typically takes about 90 minutes after you fall asleep to enter your first period of REM sleep. This timing can vary quite a bit from person to person, but for most healthy adults, REM arrives after you’ve cycled through three progressively deeper stages of non-REM sleep first.
What Happens in the 90 Minutes Before REM
Your brain doesn’t jump straight into REM. It moves through three non-REM stages first, each one deeper than the last. Stage N1, the lightest phase, lasts less than 10 minutes. It’s the drowsy transition between wakefulness and sleep, and you can be woken from it easily. Stage N2 follows and lasts roughly 30 to 60 minutes. Your heart rate slows, your body temperature drops, and your brain produces short bursts of electrical activity that help consolidate memories. Stage N3 is deep sleep, lasting about 20 to 40 minutes. This is the most physically restorative stage, when tissue repair and immune function ramp up.
Add those stages together and you get roughly 60 to 110 minutes before REM begins. The commonly cited “90-minute sleep cycle” is an average, not a fixed rule. Individual cycles can range from about 60 minutes to 110 minutes depending on the person, the night, and other factors.
How REM Changes Throughout the Night
Your first REM period is short, often lasting only about 10 minutes. But with each new sleep cycle across the night, the time you spend in REM grows longer while deep sleep shrinks. By the final cycles before you wake up, REM periods can stretch close to an hour. This is why most of your REM sleep happens in the second half of the night. If you cut your sleep short by even an hour or two, you’re disproportionately losing REM time, not just total sleep.
Why It Matters for Naps
Because REM typically takes over 45 minutes to arrive, a standard 20- to 30-minute power nap won’t include any REM sleep at all. That’s actually by design. Naps that stay in the lighter non-REM stages leave you feeling refreshed without the grogginess that comes from waking mid-cycle. If you nap for 90 minutes or longer, you’ll likely complete a full cycle including REM, which can be useful if you’re sleep-deprived but may leave you feeling disoriented if you wake at the wrong moment.
What Makes REM Arrive Faster or Slower
Sleep Deprivation
When you’ve been significantly sleep-deprived, your brain prioritizes the stages it missed. This phenomenon, called REM rebound, can cause you to enter REM faster, spend more time in it, and experience more intense dreams. Research shows this effect becomes more pronounced with longer periods of lost sleep. In one study, people who missed only 3 to 6 hours of sleep saw a rebound mostly in deep sleep, not REM. But after 12 to 24 hours without sleep, both deep sleep and REM increased. After 96 hours or more of deprivation, REM rebound was dramatic.
Age
Newborns spend about 50% of their sleep in REM and can enter it almost immediately after falling asleep. Adults spend roughly 20 to 25% of the night in REM, with the typical 90-minute delay. Older adults tend to get even less REM as a proportion of total sleep, and their sleep cycles become shorter and more fragmented.
Medications
Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, are one of the most common causes of delayed or reduced REM sleep. Research published in the journal CHEST found that people taking antidepressants had significantly longer delays before REM onset and were more likely to have no measurable REM sleep at all during a night. They also spent less total time in REM overall. If you’re on antidepressants and notice changes in your dreaming, this is likely why.
Alcohol
Drinking before bed initially suppresses REM sleep in the first half of the night. As your body metabolizes the alcohol, REM often rebounds in the second half, leading to fragmented sleep and vivid or disturbing dreams toward morning. Even moderate drinking can shift when and how much REM you get.
When REM Arrives Too Quickly
Reaching REM in under 15 minutes is considered abnormally fast and is one of the diagnostic markers for narcolepsy. Sleep specialists call this a sleep-onset REM period, or SOREMP. During a diagnostic sleep study, if a person enters REM within 15 minutes on at least two short nap tests, it’s a strong indicator of narcolepsy. People with this condition often experience vivid dreams or hallucinations right as they fall asleep, precisely because their brain skips ahead to REM almost immediately.
Outside of narcolepsy, unusually short REM latency can also occur after severe sleep deprivation, withdrawal from REM-suppressing medications, or during recovery from alcohol dependence. In these cases, the short REM onset is temporary and resolves once normal sleep patterns return.
