Your body eliminates alcohol at a fixed rate of about 0.015 BAC per hour, which works out to roughly one standard drink every 60 to 75 minutes. Nothing speeds this up. If you’ve had four drinks and your BAC is around 0.08 (the legal limit in most U.S. states), expect four to five hours before your blood alcohol reaches zero.
How Your Body Processes Alcohol
Your liver does nearly all the work. An enzyme breaks alcohol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, and a second enzyme converts that into acetate, which eventually becomes water and carbon dioxide. This assembly line runs at a near-constant speed regardless of how much alcohol is waiting to be processed. When you drink faster than your liver can keep up, alcohol accumulates in your bloodstream and your BAC rises.
A secondary enzyme pathway kicks in only after heavy drinking, and a third handles a tiny fraction. But for practical purposes, your liver’s main pathway sets the pace, and that pace is fixed at about one drink per hour.
Estimated Sobering Times by Number of Drinks
These estimates assume an average-weight adult and standard drink sizes (12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, 1.5 oz liquor):
- 2 drinks: roughly 2 to 3 hours to reach zero BAC
- 4 drinks: roughly 4 to 5 hours
- 6 drinks: roughly 6 to 8 hours
- 8 drinks: roughly 8 to 11 hours
- 10+ drinks: 12 hours or more
These ranges exist because body weight, sex, liver size, and other variables shift your peak BAC and how quickly you clear it. A lighter person who drinks the same amount as a heavier person will start at a higher BAC and need more time to reach zero.
Why Women and Men Sober Up Differently
Women generally reach higher BAC levels than men after the same number of drinks, even at the same body weight. The main reason is body composition: women typically carry a lower proportion of body water, so alcohol is less diluted in the bloodstream. Some research also points to differences in enzyme activity in the stomach and liver.
When researchers controlled for body size by delivering alcohol intravenously (bypassing digestion entirely), men still showed higher alcohol elimination rates. The difference was largely explained by greater lean body mass and larger liver volume, both of which give the liver more capacity to process alcohol. In practical terms, a woman and a man who drink the same amount may feel similar levels of intoxication, but she is likely starting from a higher BAC and may take longer to fully clear it.
How Food Changes the Timeline
Eating before or while drinking lowers your peak BAC by slowing how quickly alcohol reaches your bloodstream. But food also does something less well known: it temporarily speeds up how fast your liver clears alcohol. One study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine found that a high-carbohydrate meal nearly doubled the liver’s elimination rate for about two hours after eating. Two hours after the meal, the rate was 39 mg/dL per hour compared to 21 mg/dL per hour on an empty stomach. By four hours after eating, though, the rate dropped back to baseline.
So eating a big meal before a night out does two helpful things. It prevents your BAC from spiking as high, and it gives your liver a temporary boost. But the effect fades, and it won’t dramatically cut hours off your total sobering time if you’ve been drinking heavily.
Coffee, Cold Showers, and Other Myths
Cold showers, fresh air, exercise, and black coffee do not reduce your BAC or help your liver work faster. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control states this plainly: time is the only thing that removes alcohol from your system. Coffee might make you feel more alert, but alertness is not sobriety. You can be wide awake and still dangerously impaired.
You Can Feel Sober and Still Be Impaired
This is the most dangerous part of the sobering-up timeline. Research has shown that your physical coordination recovers before your thinking does. In one study, participants who drank to a peak BAC of 0.10% saw their reaction times return to normal as their BAC dropped. But they continued making significantly more errors on cognitive tasks, even on the downslope when they felt increasingly normal.
The practical danger is easy to picture. A driver whose BAC is falling may react just as quickly as usual but slam the accelerator instead of the brake. The speed of the response looks fine. The decision behind it is still impaired. This gap between feeling sober and being sober is why “sleeping it off” sometimes isn’t enough. If you drank heavily the night before and slept six hours, your BAC might technically be near zero, but your judgment and decision-making can still be compromised.
How to Estimate Your Own Timeline
Start with your last drink, not your first. Your BAC continues to rise for 30 to 45 minutes after your final drink (longer if you ate recently). From that peak, subtract 0.015 for every hour that passes. If you think your peak BAC was around 0.12, you’re looking at roughly eight hours to reach zero.
A simpler rule of thumb: count your total drinks, then allow at least one hour per drink after you stop, plus one extra hour as a buffer. If you had six drinks and stopped at midnight, your BAC likely won’t hit zero until at least 7 a.m. And given the research on lingering cognitive impairment, adding another hour or two beyond that before driving or making important decisions is a reasonable precaution.
In every U.S. state except Utah, the legal BAC limit for driving is 0.08. Utah’s limit is 0.05. But impairment begins well below either threshold. Studies consistently show measurable declines in reaction time and judgment starting around 0.02 to 0.04, which is one to two drinks for most people. A BAC of zero is the only number that guarantees you’re fully clear.
