Your liver processes alcohol at a fairly fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour. That means if you have three drinks over the course of an evening, it will take roughly three hours for your body to fully break down the alcohol, though several factors can shift that timeline in either direction.
A standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That’s a 12-ounce beer at 5% alcohol, a 5-ounce glass of wine at 12%, or a 1.5-ounce shot of spirits at 40%. Despite feeling quite different going down, each of these delivers the same amount of alcohol to your liver.
What Happens Inside Your Liver
Your liver does the heavy lifting, handling the vast majority of the alcohol you consume. It uses two enzymes working in sequence. The first converts alcohol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. The second enzyme quickly breaks acetaldehyde down into acetate, a relatively harmless substance your body then converts into water and carbon dioxide.
This two-step process is why your liver can only work at a certain pace. The enzymes have a limited capacity, and no amount of coffee, water, or food after drinking will speed them up. Time is the only thing that clears alcohol from your system.
There is a backup system. A secondary pathway in the liver activates when alcohol levels are high, particularly in people who drink frequently. In heavy drinkers, the key enzyme in this backup system increases four to tenfold, which contributes to what’s known as metabolic tolerance. This is one reason chronic drinkers can appear less impaired at the same blood alcohol level: their livers have adapted to process alcohol faster. That adaptation comes at a cost, though, because the same enzyme also changes how the liver handles medications and other substances.
The Half-Life of Alcohol
Alcohol has a half-life of four to five hours, meaning it takes that long for your body to eliminate half of the alcohol in your bloodstream. Full elimination requires roughly five half-lives, which adds up to about 25 hours. That doesn’t mean you’ll feel drunk for a full day after a couple of drinks. It means trace amounts of alcohol and its byproducts may linger in your body longer than you’d expect, even after you feel completely sober.
This is worth keeping in mind if you drink in the evening and have an early morning commitment. After four or five drinks at dinner, you could still have measurable alcohol in your blood the next morning.
Why Some People Metabolize Alcohol Faster
The one-drink-per-hour rule is an average. Your actual rate depends on biology you can’t control.
- Body composition and sex. Women generally have a lower proportion of body water than men of similar weight, which means the same number of drinks produces a higher blood alcohol concentration. Men also tend to have larger livers and more lean body mass, giving them higher elimination rates measured in grams per hour. Women may reach a higher peak from the same amount of alcohol and take longer to clear it.
- Genetics. About 30% of people with East Asian ancestry carry a gene variant that dramatically reduces their ability to break down acetaldehyde, the toxic intermediate step. This causes the well-known “flush reaction,” with facial redness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat after even small amounts of alcohol. People with this variant also show a slower overall rate of alcohol metabolism.
- Age. Older adults metabolize alcohol more slowly. Total body water decreases with age, and the liver’s processing speed declines. After the same number of drinks, an older person will have a higher blood alcohol concentration and a longer clearance time than a younger person.
- Drinking history. Regular heavy drinkers develop an enhanced backup metabolic pathway that processes alcohol faster. This metabolic tolerance is separate from the brain’s learned tolerance, and both contribute to needing more alcohol to feel its effects.
How Food Changes the Timeline
Eating before or while you drink doesn’t help your liver work faster in any meaningful way, but it significantly slows down how quickly alcohol reaches your bloodstream. Alcohol absorbs much more rapidly on an empty stomach. A solid meal delays gastric emptying, which means alcohol trickles into your small intestine (where most absorption happens) more gradually. The result is a lower, flatter peak in blood alcohol concentration compared to drinking the same amount on an empty stomach.
Some research suggests food may also slightly increase the rate at which your body eliminates alcohol, though the effect is modest. The bigger practical impact is on how drunk you feel and how high your BAC climbs. Drinking on a full stomach won’t eliminate the alcohol any faster, but it will reduce the spike that leads to impairment.
How Long Alcohol Shows Up on Tests
Even after your liver has finished processing alcohol, traces can be detected depending on what’s being tested.
A breath test picks up alcohol for roughly 12 to 24 hours after your last drink, depending on how much you consumed. Blood tests have a similar window. Urine tests can detect a metabolite of alcohol for up to 48 to 80 hours. Hair tests are the longest window by far: alcohol can be detected in hair strands for one to six months, and in some cases even longer, though most people cut their hair before that becomes relevant.
For everyday purposes, the practical number to remember is that it takes roughly one hour per standard drink for your BAC to return to zero. If you had a heavy night of six drinks finishing at midnight, your body likely won’t finish processing the alcohol until at least 6 a.m., and possibly later depending on your size, sex, age, and genetics. Planning around that timeline is more reliable than trying to gauge sobriety by how you feel.
