How long kratom stays in your urine depends heavily on your usage history:

  • Regular use (several times per week): You may test positive for up to a week after your last dose.
  • Heavy, long-term use (daily or multiple times daily): Case reports have documented detectable levels in urine up to approximately 2 weeks after the last dose.

Why Kratom Lingers Longer Than You’d Expect

In a pharmacokinetic study of human subjects, the half-life varied dramatically based on dose and whether someone had been taking kratom repeatedly.

After a single low dose, the half-life of mitragynine averaged about 8.5 hours. At higher single doses, it climbed to around 43 hours. For people taking kratom daily at moderate-to-high doses, the half-life stretched to nearly 68 hours, roughly three days just to clear half the compound. Since it generally takes five to six half-lives for a substance to leave your system entirely, that math puts heavy users well into the 2-week window.

The other active compound, 7-hydroxymitragynine, clears much faster. After a single dose, its half-life is under 5 hours. But with repeated daily dosing, it can climb to around 25 hours at higher doses. Can Kratom Cause a False Positive for Opioids?

This is a common concern. Kratom acts on opioid receptors in the brain, which is why its effects feel similar to opioids. But standard immunoassay screens for opioids are designed to detect the chemical structures of drugs like morphine, codeine, and oxycodone. Mitragynine has a different molecular structure, so it generally does not trigger a false positive on these panels.

That said, no immunoassay is perfect, and isolated cases of cross-reactivity have been reported anecdotally. If you’re using kratom and a standard opioid screen comes back positive, a confirmation test using LC-MS/MS would distinguish kratom alkaloids from actual opioids and should clear up the result.

For someone who uses it daily, expect a week at minimum, with the possibility of detection stretching to two weeks.
