Your body eliminates alcohol at a fairly fixed rate of about 0.015 to 0.020 percent blood alcohol concentration (BAC) per hour. In practical terms, that means a single standard drink of liquor (1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits) takes roughly one to two hours to fully metabolize. But “staying in your system” depends on what you mean: alcohol itself clears within hours, while certain byproducts can be detected in urine for up to 72 hours and in hair for months.
How Your Body Processes Liquor
When you drink liquor, about 90 to 95 percent of the alcohol is broken down in your liver. The remaining 5 to 10 percent leaves your body unchanged through your breath and urine, which is why breathalyzers work. In the liver, enzymes convert ethanol into a toxic intermediate compound called acetaldehyde, which is then quickly broken down into acetic acid and eventually into carbon dioxide and water.
Your liver has enough of its primary alcohol-processing enzyme to handle one standard drink within about an hour or two. The critical point: this rate stays constant no matter how much you keep drinking. Unlike most substances your body processes, alcohol elimination follows a linear, fixed-pace pattern at typical drinking levels. Your liver is essentially working at full capacity after even moderate amounts of alcohol, so drinking faster doesn’t speed up the line. It just makes the line longer.
People who drink heavily over time do develop some metabolic tolerance. A secondary processing pathway in the liver, which normally plays a minor role, ramps up with chronic alcohol use. This pathway can increase its activity 4 to 10 fold in regular drinkers, which partly explains why heavy drinkers can consume more before feeling the same effects. This is not a health advantage. The same pathway generates harmful molecules that damage liver cells.
Estimated Clearance Times by Number of Drinks
One standard drink of liquor in the U.S. contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. Using the average elimination rate of 0.015 BAC per hour, here’s roughly how long it takes for alcohol to clear your bloodstream entirely:
- 1 drink: 1 to 2 hours
- 2 drinks: 3 to 4 hours
- 3 drinks: 4 to 6 hours
- 4 drinks: 6 to 8 hours
- 5 drinks: 8 to 10 hours
- 8 drinks: 12 to 16 hours
These are rough estimates for an average-sized person. Your actual clearance time could be faster or slower depending on several biological factors. And keep in mind that a “drink” at a bar or party is often more than 1.5 ounces of liquor. A strong cocktail or a generous pour can easily count as two or more standard drinks.
Detection Windows for Different Tests
How long alcohol shows up on a test depends entirely on which test is being used. Each one measures something different and has its own detection window.
A standard breath test (breathalyzer) detects alcohol only while it’s actively circulating in your blood. This window roughly matches the clearance times above. Once your BAC hits zero, a breathalyzer won’t pick up anything. Blood tests work the same way, with a detection window limited to hours after your last drink.
Urine testing is where things get more complicated. A basic urine alcohol test has a short window, similar to blood. But many testing programs now use a more sensitive marker called EtG (ethyl glucuronide), a byproduct your body creates when processing alcohol. After a few drinks, EtG can show up in urine for up to 48 hours. Heavier drinking can push that window to 72 hours or even slightly longer. EtG tests are sensitive enough to detect levels from very small amounts of drinking, though there have been rare concerns about false positives from sources like mouthwash or hand sanitizer.
Hair follicle tests have the longest window by far. Alcohol markers can appear in hair for one to six months after drinking, though it takes several weeks after consumption for the markers to show up in a testable strand. These tests aren’t used to detect a single drinking event. They’re designed to identify patterns of use over time.
Factors That Change How Fast You Clear Alcohol
The often-cited “one drink per hour” rule is a rough average, not a personal guarantee. Your actual metabolism rate depends on several things you can’t control and one thing you can.
Body composition matters more than body weight alone. Research from the University of Illinois found that lean body mass, your total weight minus fat, is one of the strongest predictors of how quickly you eliminate alcohol. This is because lean body mass correlates with lean liver tissue, the part of the liver that actually does the work. In a study of 143 women, those with higher lean body mass cleared alcohol significantly faster. The average elimination rate was 6 grams of alcohol per hour for women at a healthy weight, 7 grams per hour for overweight women, and 9 grams per hour for women with obesity, driven largely by the fact that heavier individuals had more total lean mass despite having more fat as well.
Age also plays a role. The same research found that older women with higher lean body mass cleared alcohol 52 percent faster than younger, lighter women. The interaction between age and lean body mass accounted for 72 percent of the variation in how long it took participants to eliminate alcohol.
Sex differences are well established too. Women generally have less of the primary alcohol-processing enzyme in their stomachs and livers and tend to have a higher body fat percentage, which means alcohol distributes into a smaller volume of water and produces higher BAC from the same number of drinks.
Genetics play a major role, particularly among people of East Asian descent who often carry variants of the enzymes involved in alcohol breakdown. These variants can cause acetaldehyde to build up faster, leading to facial flushing, nausea, and a rapid heartbeat, and they also change how quickly alcohol is ultimately cleared.
How Food Affects the Timeline
Eating before or while you drink doesn’t speed up alcohol metabolism, but it does slow absorption, which lowers your peak BAC. A lower peak means less total time above any given threshold, even though the liver’s processing rate stays the same. Research has found that a high-carbohydrate meal was particularly effective at reducing peak blood alcohol levels, while high-protein meals had less impact. Drinking on an empty stomach lets alcohol flood into your bloodstream quickly, producing a higher and faster peak that takes longer to come down from.
This is one of the few variables you actually control. Eating a substantial meal before drinking won’t make alcohol disappear faster, but it will reduce how high your BAC climbs in the first place.
What Won’t Speed Things Up
Coffee, cold showers, exercise, and “sweating it out” do not increase your alcohol elimination rate. Your liver works at its own pace regardless of what the rest of your body is doing. Coffee might make you feel more alert, but your BAC remains exactly the same. Water and electrolytes help with hydration and may ease hangover symptoms, but they don’t accelerate the metabolic process. The only thing that reliably clears alcohol from your system is time.
