What the Burning Feels Like and How Long It Lasts

The initial burning is intense but short-lived. Most people experience peak discomfort in the first few minutes, with the pain steadily dropping over the next 10 to 30 minutes as the active compounds break down on the skin’s surface. The chemical works by triggering pain receptors in your nerve endings, creating a burning sensation even though no actual thermal burn is occurring.

Redness is the most common visible effect, and it generally clears within about an hour. If the spray was concentrated, applied at close range, or sat on your skin for a while before you washed it off, you may develop blisters or more noticeable irritation. These more severe skin reactions typically resolve within four days.

Delayed Reactions to Watch For

Even after the initial burning fades, your skin isn’t necessarily in the clear. Some people develop delayed reactions 12 to 24 hours after exposure. These can show up as allergic contact dermatitis (an itchy, red rash) or, less commonly, clusters of small pustules across a wider area of skin. Participants rated their discomfort at multiple time points over 15 minutes, and there was no difference between the two groups. Water and soap work just as well as any specialty product.

Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth before your hands are completely clean. Residue transfers easily, and recontaminating sensitive areas will restart the pain cycle. Remove contaminated clothing as soon as possible and wash it separately.

Why Some Exposures Are Worse Than Others

Several factors influence how long the effects stick around. Distance matters: a close-range spray deposits more concentrated residue. Skin that’s sweaty or broken absorbs the active compounds more readily. Areas with thinner skin, like the face, neck, and inner arms, tend to react more intensely than thicker-skinned areas like your palms or forearms.

How quickly you decontaminate also plays a major role. Someone who washes within a minute or two will generally experience far less irritation than someone who waits 10 or 15 minutes. In dry or windy conditions, particles can also resettle on skin after initial removal, so washing in a sheltered area with running water is ideal.

Residue Can Linger After Symptoms Fade

Even after the burning stops, active residue can remain on your skin and clothing. This is particularly relevant if you touch your face later or come into close contact with someone else. The oily base of pepper spray formulations makes it stick to surfaces, so a single wash may not remove everything. Washing the affected area a second time, 15 to 30 minutes after the first, helps ensure you’ve cleared the residue completely. Pay special attention to hair, eyebrows, and any creases in the skin where particles can hide.
