A single, isolated use sits at the short end of that range, while heavy, daily use pushes detection windows toward the upper boundary or occasionally beyond it.
Why THC Lingers Longer Than Other Drugs
Most recreational drugs are water-soluble, meaning your kidneys flush them out relatively quickly. THC works differently. It dissolves in fat, so after you use marijuana, THC migrates into your fat cells and accumulates there over time. Your liver then gradually converts THC into a byproduct that drug tests actually look for. That byproduct has a half-life of roughly 30 hours after a single use, meaning it takes about 30 hours for your body to eliminate half of it. This fat-storage mechanism is exactly why marijuana has the longest detection window of any commonly tested substance, and why two people who smoke the same amount on the same day can test positive for very different lengths of time.
Urine Test Detection Windows
Urine testing is the most common method used in workplace and legal screening. Standard tests flag a sample as positive when THC metabolite levels exceed 50 nanograms per milliliter. If a sample hits that threshold, a more sensitive confirmatory test checks for levels above 15 ng/mL.
General detection windows break down by usage pattern:

Hair testing is less common and is generally reserved for situations where long-term usage patterns matter more than recent use. It is also less reliable for detecting one-time or very light use.
Edibles vs. Smoking
How you consume marijuana affects how quickly THC enters your system, though the ultimate detection window doesn’t change dramatically. When you smoke or vape, THC hits your bloodstream through your lungs within seconds. When you eat an edible, THC moves through your stomach and into your bloodstream much more slowly, sometimes taking 30 minutes to two hours to fully absorb.
Either way, your liver breaks THC down into the same metabolites. Edibles may produce a slightly longer detection window for a given dose because absorption is slower and more drawn out, but the primary factors remain frequency of use and body composition, not the method of consumption.
Can Exercise Release Stored THC?
This is a real phenomenon, though its practical impact is limited. When you exercise, your body burns fat for fuel, and some of the THC stored in those fat cells gets released back into your bloodstream. A study of 14 regular cannabis users found that 35 minutes of moderate cycling produced a small but statistically significant spike in blood THC levels. The increase was modest (under 40%) and disappeared within two hours.
Fasting for 12 hours, on the other hand, did not significantly raise THC or metabolite levels. The overall conclusion from researchers is that exercise and food deprivation are unlikely to cause changes large enough to flip a drug test from negative to positive. If you’re already close to the detection cutoff, intense exercise right before a test is worth being aware of, but it’s not a major concern for most people.
CBD Products and Drug Tests
Pure CBD should not trigger a positive result on a standard marijuana drug test, since these tests look for THC metabolites, not CBD. The problem is that many CBD products aren’t pure. A 2017 analysis of 84 CBD products sold online found that only 31% accurately listed their CBD content, and 21% contained THC even when the label said otherwise.
Full-spectrum CBD products legally contain up to 0.3% THC, and regular use of these products can build up enough THC metabolites to produce a positive test. If avoiding a positive result matters to you, broad-spectrum or isolate CBD products carry less risk, but the lack of consistent regulation means label accuracy is never guaranteed.
Factors That Determine Your Personal Timeline
No detection chart can give you an exact answer for your specific situation. The timeline depends on several interacting variables:
- Frequency and duration of use: This is the single biggest factor. Someone who used once three days ago is in a completely different position than someone who used daily for months and stopped a week ago.
- Body fat percentage: More fat tissue means more storage capacity for THC and a slower release back into circulation.

For a one-time user worried about a standard urine test, three to four days of abstinence is typically sufficient. For someone who has used daily for weeks or months, the safest assumption is that detection could last three to four weeks, with five weeks as an outside possibility. Blood and saliva tests are far more forgiving in terms of timeline, but they are also designed to catch more recent use.
