Federal workplace guidelines set the saliva test cutoff at 4 ng/mL for the initial screen and 2 ng/mL for confirmation. Because the window is so short, saliva testing is increasingly used in roadside checks and situations where the goal is to determine whether someone used cannabis in the past day, not the past week.
Blood Tests: Mostly Used in Legal Settings
Blood tests measure active THC circulating in your bloodstream. THC levels in blood spike quickly after smoking or ingesting cannabis, then drop rapidly as the compound moves into fat tissue and organs. For most occasional users, THC falls below detectable levels in blood within a few hours to a couple of days.
Blood testing is less common for employment screening and more often used in DUI investigations or accident-related testing, where the question is whether someone was impaired at a specific moment. The challenge is that chronic users can have low but measurable levels of THC in their blood for days after their last use, even when they’re no longer impaired.
Hair Follicle Tests: The Longest Window

Hair tests are less common in routine employment screening because they’re more expensive and can’t detect very recent use (it takes about a week for drug metabolites to appear in new hair growth). Does Exercise Speed Up the Process?
Exercise can actually complicate things in the short term. A study that had 14 regular cannabis users complete 35 minutes on a stationary bike found that moderate aerobic exercise caused a small but statistically significant increase in blood THC levels. When you exercise, your body breaks down fat for energy, and THC stored in that fat gets released back into your bloodstream.

The only reliable way to clear THC from your system is time. Staying hydrated and maintaining normal physical activity supports your body’s natural metabolism, but nothing shortcuts the process. Drinking excessive water before a urine test can dilute your sample, but most testing labs flag diluted specimens and require a retest.
