MiraDry results are permanent. The procedure uses microwave energy to destroy sweat glands in the underarm area, and once those glands are gone, they don’t regenerate. Clinical data now extends to three years post-treatment, showing that the vast majority of patients maintain their results over time.
Why the Results Are Permanent
MiraDry works by delivering focused electromagnetic energy to a zone 2 to 5 millimeters below the skin’s surface, right where sweat glands sit. The energy heats these glands to the point of destruction, a process called thermolysis. Meanwhile, a cooling system protects the outer layers of skin during the procedure.
The key biological fact is that sweat glands do not regenerate once destroyed. You’re born with a fixed number of them, and eliminating a portion in the underarm area creates a lasting reduction in sweat, odor, and even hair growth in that region. The FDA cleared miraDry for treating excessive underarm sweating, reducing underarm odor, and permanently reducing underarm hair.
What the Long-Term Data Shows
A study published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery followed 103 patients with severe underarm sweating who received one or two miraDry treatments. At the three-year follow-up, 91% of respondents had improved compared to their baseline, and none had worsened. Quality-of-life scores dropped dramatically, from a median of 26 (on a scale measuring how much sweating disrupted daily life) down to 6 at the three-year mark.
About 87% of patients rated their sweating as mild or manageable three years out. Roughly 13% still reported significant sweating at the three-year point, suggesting that a small percentage of patients don’t get the level of relief they hoped for. Notably, results at three years were comparable to results at one year, meaning the benefits held steady rather than fading over time.
How Many Treatments You’ll Need
Most people achieve their desired results after one or two sessions. In the three-year study, about half the patients had a single treatment and half had two, and both groups showed significant improvement. A second session, typically scheduled a few months after the first, can target any remaining glands the first treatment missed. Each session takes about an hour per underarm.
How MiraDry Compares to Botox
Botox injections for underarm sweating typically last 4 to 6 months before wearing off, requiring repeat treatments indefinitely. A head-to-head trial comparing the two found that at one year, both produced similar levels of sweat reduction. The difference is that Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to sweat glands (the glands are still alive and will resume sweating), while miraDry eliminates the glands entirely.
For someone managing excessive sweating over years, this distinction matters practically and financially. Botox means recurring appointments and costs every few months. MiraDry involves a higher upfront expense but no ongoing treatments.
Recovery and Side Effects
Numbness in the underarm area is normal for several hours after the procedure. Swelling in the treated area typically lasts a few weeks. Other common effects during that recovery window include tingling or altered sensation in the skin, redness, bruising, and occasionally swelling that extends to the arm or torso. Most people return to normal activities within a few days, though exercise is usually restricted for about a week.
What MiraDry Won’t Do
MiraDry only treats the underarms. It won’t help with sweating on your palms, feet, face, or other areas. It also reduces rather than completely eliminates underarm sweat. Your underarms will still produce some moisture, since not every single gland is destroyed in a session, but the reduction is substantial enough that most patients move from severe sweating to a level they consider normal. The roughly 2% of your body’s sweat glands located in your underarms aren’t essential for temperature regulation, so removing them doesn’t cause your body to overheat or compensate by sweating more elsewhere.
