Percocet is an immediate-release combination of two pain relievers: oxycodone (an opioid) and acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). The acetaminophen component reaches its peak blood levels within 30 to 60 minutes after you take the pill, so you’ll typically start feeling some relief fairly quickly. Oxycodone peaks a bit later. Most people notice meaningful pain relief within 15 to 30 minutes, with full effects building over the first hour or two.
The relief window runs roughly 4 to 6 hours per dose. This is consistent across all available strengths, from the lowest (2.5 mg oxycodone/325 mg acetaminophen) to the highest (10 mg oxycodone/325 mg acetaminophen). The difference between strengths is the intensity of pain relief, not how long it lasts.
How Long It Stays in Your System
Pain relief fading doesn’t mean the drug has left your body. Oxycodone has an average elimination half-life of about 3.5 hours, meaning half the dose is still circulating in your blood roughly 3 to 5 hours after you take it. It generally takes four to five half-lives for a drug to be fully eliminated, which puts full clearance of oxycodone somewhere around 15 to 24 hours after your last dose. During this tail-end window, you may not feel pain relief anymore, but the drug can still contribute to side effects like drowsiness, constipation, or slowed breathing, especially if doses overlap.
Drug Test Detection Windows
If you’re wondering how long Percocet shows up on a drug test, the answer depends on the type of test:
- Urine: 1 to 1.5 days after the last dose. One important detail: oxycodone often screens negative on standard opiate immunoassays, which are designed to catch drugs like morphine and codeine. It typically requires a test that specifically looks for oxycodone.
- Blood: 12 to 24 hours.
- Saliva: 12 to 24 hours.
These are general windows. Heavier or longer-term use can extend detection times because the drug accumulates in the body over repeated doses.
Factors That Make It Last Longer or Shorter
