Percocet’s active painkiller, oxycodone, is mostly cleared from your bloodstream within about 20 hours, but it can show up on a urine drug test for roughly 2 to 4 days after your last dose. The exact window depends on the type of test, how much you’ve been taking, and individual factors like kidney function and age.
How Oxycodone Leaves Your Body
Percocet contains two drugs: oxycodone (an opioid) and acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). They clear at different speeds, but oxycodone is the one that matters for drug testing and for how long you feel the effects.
Oxycodone has a plasma half-life of 3 to 5 hours. That means every 3 to 5 hours, the concentration in your blood drops by half. After about 5 half-lives, a drug is considered effectively eliminated from the bloodstream, which puts full clearance at roughly 15 to 25 hours for most people. The acetaminophen component clears faster, with a half-life of just 1.5 to 2.5 hours at normal doses.
But “cleared from the blood” doesn’t mean undetectable. Your liver breaks oxycodone down into byproducts called metabolites, primarily noroxycodone and oxymorphone. These metabolites linger in your urine, hair, and saliva longer than the drug itself stays in your blood. Drug tests look for both oxycodone and these metabolites.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Different drug tests have different lookback periods:
- Urine: 2 to 4 days after the last dose. This is the most common test for workplace and clinical screening. Federal workplace testing (used by the Department of Transportation, for example) flags a sample as positive when oxycodone or oxymorphone reaches or exceeds 100 nanograms per milliliter.
- Blood: Up to about 24 hours. Blood tests reflect what’s actively circulating, so the window is short.
- Saliva: 1 to 4 days, though saliva tests are less standardized and less commonly used for opioids.
- Hair: Up to 90 days. Hair testing captures a long history of use but is rarely used outside of forensic or legal settings.
For most people worried about a standard drug screen, urine is the relevant test. A single dose of Percocet in someone who doesn’t take it regularly will typically clear urine within 2 to 3 days. Chronic or heavy use pushes that window closer to 4 days or occasionally longer, because the drug and its metabolites accumulate in tissues over time.
Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Clearance
The 3-to-5-hour half-life is an average. Several biological variables can shift your personal clearance time in either direction.
Kidney function plays a major role because opioids are primarily eliminated through urine. In people with impaired kidneys, oxycodone concentrations rise by roughly 50%, and one of its key metabolites (noroxycodone) increases by about 20%. That translates directly into a longer detection window. Kidney function also declines naturally with age: the filtration rate drops by nearly 1 milliliter per minute each year starting around age 30 to 40. By age 80, you’re working with about two-thirds of the kidney capacity you had at 20.
Liver enzymes determine how quickly your body converts oxycodone into its metabolites. The enzyme primarily responsible is called CYP3A4, and its activity varies widely between people. Medications that compete for the same enzyme (certain antifungals, antibiotics, and even grapefruit juice) can slow oxycodone metabolism and keep levels elevated longer. Genetic variation matters too: between 5% and 10% of white populations carry gene variants that reduce the activity of a secondary enzyme involved in oxycodone processing, while 1% to 7% carry variants that speed it up. These proportions differ across ethnic backgrounds.
Body composition and hydration also influence clearance. Oxycodone is somewhat fat-soluble, so people with higher body fat percentages may retain it slightly longer. Staying well-hydrated supports kidney filtration, though drinking extra water won’t dramatically shorten detection times.
Dose and duration of use are perhaps the most straightforward factors. A single 5 mg tablet clears faster than weeks of regular use at higher doses. With repeated dosing, oxycodone accumulates in the body, and it takes longer for levels to drop below testing thresholds.
When Effects Wear Off vs. When It’s Detectable
There’s a meaningful gap between when Percocet stops working and when it stops showing up on a test. Pain relief from immediate-release Percocet typically lasts 4 to 6 hours, which tracks closely with the half-life. But traces remain detectable in urine for days afterward.
This gap also explains withdrawal timing. If you’ve been taking Percocet regularly, withdrawal symptoms typically begin 6 to 12 hours after the last dose, right as blood levels drop significantly. That onset lines up with the drug’s short half-life. The symptoms don’t mean the drug is fully out of your system; they mean levels have fallen below what your body has adapted to.
Why Standard Screens Sometimes Miss Percocet
Basic workplace and emergency room drug panels often test for “opiates,” a category that reliably catches morphine and codeine but can miss synthetic and semi-synthetic opioids like oxycodone. If a test doesn’t specifically include an oxycodone panel, Percocet use may not be flagged at all. Federal workplace testing under DOT regulations does include a dedicated oxycodone/oxymorphone category with a 100 ng/mL cutoff for both initial and confirmatory testing. If you’re facing a specific screening, the panel matters as much as the timing.
