Revolution Plus starts killing fleas within 6 hours of application and can eliminate ticks within 12 to 24 hours. In clinical studies, a single dose killed 100% of adult fleas and maintained that level of protection for a full 5 weeks. So while it isn’t instant, most cat owners will see a noticeable difference within the first day.
Flea Kill Speed
After you apply Revolution Plus, the product begins killing fleas within 6 hours. That timeline applies not only to the fleas already on your cat but also to new fleas that jump on later. In two clinical studies, a single dose achieved 100% kill of adult fleas, and that protection lasted 5 weeks, covering the gap until your next monthly application with room to spare.
If your cat has a heavy flea infestation, you may still see live fleas during those first several hours. That’s normal. Fleas need to contact the treated skin to pick up the active ingredients, and some will die more quickly than others. You should see a dramatic drop in flea activity by the end of the first day.
Tick Kill Speed
Ticks take slightly longer. Revolution Plus significantly reduces tick counts within 12 hours and reaches 100% efficacy by 24 hours after application. That speed holds up well against reinfestations too: for new ticks that attach in the weeks following treatment, the product consistently achieved at least a 90% reduction in tick burden within 24 hours for at least three weeks.
Revolution Plus is labeled to protect against four tick species commonly found on cats: the black-legged tick (the one that carries Lyme disease), the lone star tick, the Gulf Coast tick, and the American dog tick. Protection against all four lasts one month per dose.
Ear Mites, Worms, and Heartworm
Revolution Plus also treats ear mite infestations, roundworms, and intestinal hookworms. These parasites don’t come with the same hour-by-hour kill data that fleas and ticks do, but a single monthly dose is considered a full treatment for active infections. If your cat is scratching at their ears from mites, you can expect gradual improvement over the days following application as the mites die off and the irritation subsides.
For heartworm prevention, Revolution Plus works differently. It doesn’t kill adult heartworms. Instead, each monthly dose eliminates the larval stage of heartworm that mosquitoes transmit, stopping the parasite before it can mature. This protection covers one month per dose, so consistent monthly application is essential. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember and resume the monthly schedule to minimize any gap in protection. Year-round dosing is recommended, or at minimum from one month before mosquito season through one month after it ends.
How It Works
Revolution Plus combines two active ingredients that attack parasites through their nervous systems. One targets internal parasites like heartworm larvae, roundworms, and hookworms by paralyzing them. The other targets external parasites, specifically fleas and ticks, by blocking a key receptor in their nerve cells. This second ingredient is effective even against flea populations that have developed resistance to older parasite treatments, which is one reason the product kills fleas so quickly.
After You Apply It
The solution dries quickly and becomes waterproof within two hours. If your cat gets wet or needs a bath after that two-hour window, the product remains fully effective. Before it dries, avoid touching the application site or letting other pets groom the area.
Revolution Plus is approved for cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older, weighing at least 2.8 pounds. It comes in pre-measured single-dose tubes based on your cat’s weight range, so there’s no measuring or guessing involved. You apply it to the skin at the base of the skull, where your cat can’t lick it off.
What to Expect in the First Week
Here’s a realistic timeline of what most cat owners notice:
- First 6 hours: Fleas begin dying. You may still see some live fleas moving through your cat’s fur, especially with heavy infestations.
- 12 to 24 hours: Ticks begin dying and detaching. Flea activity drops significantly.
- 2 to 3 days: Live fleas should be gone or nearly gone. Ear mite symptoms start improving.
- 1 week: Full effects are well established. Any new fleas or ticks that land on your cat will be killed within hours.
If you’re still seeing a large number of live fleas after 48 hours, the issue is likely environmental. Flea eggs and pupae living in carpets, bedding, and furniture will continue hatching for weeks. Revolution Plus kills those new fleas as they jump onto your cat, but cleaning and treating your home speeds up the process considerably. Vacuuming daily and washing pet bedding in hot water helps break the cycle faster.
